The meeting of Hampstead Town and Cheshunt in the semi-final of the Middlesex Charity Cup resulted in a win for the former by the unusual score of six goals to five [6-5]. Very bad ground conditions combined with a pronounced superiority of attack over defence on both sides were responsible for the heavy scoring. This success ensures another repetition of history, as it again brings Hampstead and Botwell Mission together in the final, won last season by the latter club.
Cheshunt opened brilliantly, and their left wing pair, R. Cooper and A.E. Sell, were always dangerous, yet the opening goal deservedly fell to Hampstead, S. Briscoe's fine run and centre enabling Travers Day to score splendidly. This young and promising recruit to the Hampstead side did the hat-trick during the afternoon, thus proving his scoring ability, and he reduced the handicap of C. Wise's absence to a minimum.
S. Dunstone accidentally deflected the ball into his own goal and gave the visitors an unexpected equaliser, but Hampstead forged ahead with further good goals by H.S. White and Travers Day, P. Walker scoring for Cheshunt just before the interval whistle.
After R. Kirby, S. Howard and Travers Day had established a substantial lead for the home side, brilliant play by the Cheshunt forwards resulted in P. Walker, F. Gear and R. Cooper scoring.
