It was only to be expected under the law of average that Hampstead [Town]'s long winning sequence would be levelled up with a lean period, and they have yet to score a success in the New Year. Their last four losing games have been played away, under adverse conditions in regard to illness and injury to players, and their usually prolific goal scorers have not once found the net in these encounters.
At Barnet, in the Middlesex Senior Cup, they were again handicapped by the inability of C. Wise to play owing to illness, and other notable absentees for a similar reason necessitated a general re-arrangement of the side. Nevertheless, play was close and interesting, although confined chiefly to midfield, and contrary to expectation the ground was in good condition. A. Green saved splendid shots by R. Kirby and A.G. Cox, and at half-time the score sheet was blank. Twenty minutes after resumption R. Stringer scored for Barnet, and although making desperate efforts Hampstead failed to respond.
Lewis Smith played well at centre-half, and confirmed the good impression previously formed of his ability, and S. Dunstone was sound at back. A.G. Cox, Hampstead's inside right, was the best forward on the field.
