Match Report

From the Hendon & Finchley Times, 9 December 1921 :

Hampstead [Town] in between cup-tie successes are making splendid progress in the Athenian League, and are now well up the table. If St. Albans maintain their present position at the head, a repetition of last year's struggle between the two teams is likely to ensue later in the season.

On Saturday a keen game resulted in the defeat of Southall by three goals to none. The visitors had the assistance of some of the best of the Grenadier Guards players, but, nevertheless, Hampstead were aggressive from the start, and within ten minutes R. Kirby headed a pretty goal from S. Briscoe's centre. For a long period play was in the visitors' half, and Briscoe, who was reproducing his best form, forced many corner kicks. Although these were all centred with precision, T. Holding, who played finely throughout in goal for the visitors, saved all attempts, and with other good defensive work Southall staved off any further score before the interval.

Losing the advantage of a strong breeze Hampstead were expected to be on the defensive in the second half, but the contrary proved to be the case. Continuous pressure resulted in C. Wise being fouled in the penalty area when in the act of shooting. T. Holding, however, again saved Kirby's shot at the expense of a corner. Shortly after C. Wise, and later A.G. Cox, got through for Hampstead. In an interesting game, full of incident, only the determined and skilful defence of the visitors kept the score within bounds.

From the West Middlesex Gazette, 10 December 1921 :

Southall's visit to Hampstead Town in the Athenian League on Saturday resulted in the loss of two points, the home team winning by three clear goals. Southall made one alteration in the advertised team, Guardsman Riley playing instead of Clark at outside right. Hampstead were at full strength.

The game opened sensationally. Hampstead attacked strongly from the start, and within two minutes Kirby scored the opening goal, heading out of Holding's reach a splendid centre by Briscoe. Southall struck a bad patch and could not get going. The defence was not up to its usual form and were unable to hold the smart home forwards, while the rearranged forward line, though it showed signs of better things when further experience of each other's play had been gained, could make little headway against a defence that kicked and tackled strongly and surely. Hampstead played in convincing style, their football being of a high order, and they maintained a strong pressure until the interval, but were unable to [score] again owing to the magnificent goalkeeping of Holding, who made many brilliant saves.

Soon after restarting Hampstead were awarded a penalty, but, from the place kick taken by Kirby, Holding brought off a smart save. The home team continued to have the larger share of the game throughout the second half, their forwards combining well, and the Southall goal was frequently in danger. Holding was again conspicuous with some first-rate saves, and had no chance with the further goals that were added by Wise and Cox. Result : Hampstead Town, 3 ; Southall, 0.
