A very large crowd turned up at the Cricklewood-lane ground on Monday to see the meeting of Hampstead Town and Tufnell Park in the London Challenge Cup, and the spectators were rewarded with a fine match, full of keenness on both sides. Hampstead carried the day with two nil, and the victory was well deserved, for it was a stern fight throughout. The home skipper (C. Wise) won the toss, and put his men with the sun in their backs, thus gaining a valuable advantage during the first half.
Hampstead jumped off, and the ball was carried well away on the left, to be smartly punted across from White to Woodward, who took a hurried shot with a clear field. He drove to the left of the posts, and the visiting goalkeeper placed well up the field. His men played together well, and looked dangerous, but were twice checked by handling on their part. They fell back, and played on the defence for a time, until Leese, running out to save, foiled two attackers, and again sent his forwards well on the way to the home goal. Fricker ran round smartly on the right wing, but before he could steady himself for a shot he was robbed by Dunstone, a valuable back for the Town. Hampstead were feeding a useful left wing, but White and Wise were soon marked men, and rarely found a good opening. Tufnell by this time appeared to have found their pace, and put the Town on the defensive. Their passes for the most part were beautifully placed, but F.L. Burrage placed them offside too often. Stagg gave a good display of foot-work, and slipped past two men, but he shot over the bar, and the visitors were then driven back. Hampstead now brightened up, and commenced a good swinging game, which eventually gave the left wing the opportunity for which they had long waited. White centered cleverly, and Wise picked up and slashed right to the net, opening up the home score in fine style. At the kick-off Tufnell made a great effort, and in leaping up to save a swift shot Evans was winded for a few moments. The Park could not recover, however, and soon Meir beat the goalkeeper and sneaked into the corner of the net, but the referee ruled offside.
A tense moment of the game was during a temporary onslaught by the Park. They caused a scrimmage round the home goal, and the ball was sent between Evans' legs. A shout of "goal" went up, but before the line was reached Brewer slipped round and sent the ball into the play again. Tufnell returned immediately, and Evans was brought to his knees, and gave away a corner in saving. At this point Meir was injured, and left the field for a time. The interval arrived with the score 1-0 for the Town.
After the change of ends Fricker took possession, and came very near the home goal, but over-ran himself and placed the ball out before he could recover. Hampstead were now out to make things safe, and incidentally had an eye on their average, perhaps. Where there had been too much dribbling before, they now placed their confidence in shooting. For a time Leese stood firm, but with a well-placed running shot White reached the posts and just scraped in, raising the home score to two. Tufnell were well beaten, but continued to put up a rattling good fight in the face of big odds. They were playing one man short, Williams having been injured and carried off the field.
Charlton Athletic will be met in the next round on September 26th at Charlton.
