Hampstead [Town]'s Athenian League victory over Luton Clarence by the substantial margin of six goals to two, provided a welcome solatium for their defeat by five goals to two at Bromley on Saturday. In both games a number of new players were introduced, and as a result some excellent talent has been added to the playing strength of the club.
The usual big Boxing Day crowd at the Child's Hill enclosure were rewarded with a keen and interesting game, full of incident, and when Hampstead obtained an early two goals lead they appeared likely to have a very easy task. By brilliant play on their right wing, however, Luton eventually equalised, and it was only with considerable difficulty and splendid team work that Hampstead secured a goal lead at the interval.
G.F. Howell played well on the left wing, and he had a good share of the credit for the goals which were scored by Travers Day and C. Wise, who both did the hat trick.
Of the new men on trial, A.B. Butcher gave general satisfaction at right back, and E.N.C. Cantrell proved an excellent and untiring worker at right half. F. Abrey came in at the last minute at outside right, but at the moment is lacking in speed and experience. Nevertheless, he is a useful reserve.
During the past few weeks a large number of applications have been received from players anxious to join the club, and arrangements are being made to try most of these in the near future.
