In their first competitive match this season on the home ground at Child's Hill, Hampstead Town defeated Luton Clarence [- who conceded ground advantage -] in the first round of the preliminary competition of the F.A. Cup by the convincing margin of five goals to two, and thus earned the right to entertain Tufnell Park in the next round on October 6th.
Quick scoring featured the opening stages of the game, for almost from the kick off Wise scored a fine goal, neutralised by an equally brilliant effort by D. Russ, at outside-left for the Clarence. The Hampstead forwards, however, were particularly pressing, and before the interval further goals had been registered by K. Seabrooke (2) and G.F. Howell.
In the second half, despite the losing margin against them, Luton played pluckily and well, getting through on several occasions, but failing in front of goal. Finally they added to their score through T. Whitworth, but Seabrooke then placed the Town further ahead. In the concluding stages Hampstead were pressing continuously, and only sterling play by B. Taylor, the visiting goalkeeper, prevented further score.
The Hampstead front line was good, as usual, the two wing men, Travers Day and G.F. Howell, playing particularly well and enjoying a large share in the success of the team. Wise was not so effective as usual, the pace and strong tackling beating him on many occasions, and his shooting was erratic. W.C. Little was the best of the halves, who played below their form, although R. Wardlaw (an old Luton Clarence player) is undoubtedly an asset. A little stiffening in the Hampstead defence is essential for a really good combination, and McCracken has yet to give a convincing display.
