Hampstead [Town] registered their first points in the Athenian League this season by their well-merited victory over Kingstonians by three goals to one, and with a reproduction of this form they should quickly mount the League table.
In the course of a long series of League and Cup engagements Kingstonians have never yet tasted the sweets of victory on the Child's Hill ground. In view of their recent fine displays against strong opponents, and with a very greatly improved team, they had reason to anticipate a better result, but Hampstead, who are gradually settling down into a winning combination, rose to the occasion and maintained the home record.
Lewis Smith overshadowed the visitors' famous marksman, Macey, and a keen struggle produced many exciting episodes. Hampstead crossed over with the lead of a goal, scored in fine style by K. Seabrooke, but shortly after resuming Macey equalised. Hampstead continued to play well, and Wise scored, and immediately following a further disallowed goal by Young, they were awarded a penalty which Lewis Smith converted.
G.F. Howell (particularly in the second half) played up to his best form on the left wing, ably encouraged by the famous passes by Wise, and the forward line generally showed to advantage. Seabrooke (the centre) went lame for a time and exchanged places with Travers Day (outside right). McCracken was not greatly troubled, but did his work well, Field and Harry defending in good style.
The game was regarded by the Hampstead team and officials as the "key" match and guide for future form, and it provided a splendid fillip for the English [F.A.] Cup-tie tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon with Tufnell Park, another prominent team that has always returned from Child's Hill without the spoils.
This match between local rivals is bound to provide a keen contest, and will probably attract a record crowd to the ground.
