Hampstead Town have played two matches in the Athenian League this week. On Saturday Sutton United were the visitors to Cricklewood-lane, and in view of the Surrey club's 2-0 victory over Barnet the previous week a stiff game was expected. The expected came to pass, as although Hampstead won by three goals to one, Sutton were playing strongly at the finish. Short of Little and Briscoe, places were found for F.G. Butler on Hampstead's right wing and T.W.B. West was at right-half. Sutton's goalkeeper, G. Osborn, played a remarkably good game in the first half, otherwise Hampstead would have been more than one up at the interval. This goal came from the foot of C. Wise, and rebounded off the post into the net. Evidently Osborn thhought the ball was going wide, and he must have felt he was not in luck's way to be beaten by such a shot after he had skilfully dealt with others much more difficult.
For the greater part of the second half Sutton were the better team, but the Hampstead defence was sound, Harry once again doing yeoman service. The end was approaching when Kirby scored after brilliant work by G.F. Howell and Wise. C. Mayes got through for the visitors, but Wise, accepting another pass by Howell, a gain defeated the Sutton keeper.
The game was interesting throughout, and considering the state of the ground the football reached a good standard. Wise was the best forward on the field, and although the victory was not over one of the top-lighters in the League, it was very acceptable.
