Hampstead Town scored a good win over Barking [Town] by three goals to one, and are now among the Athenian League leaders.
With the ground at last in almost perfect condition, clever and fast football was witnessed by a big crowd, and from the outset Hampstead appeared to have the measure of their opponents, whose style of play did not win approval. After one or two scoring chances had been missed, three splendid goals came in quick succession from Howell and Wise (2), all headed in from perfect centres by Travers Day. Just before half-time Young, wriggling through the defence, almost scored a fourth, the ball striking the post.
McCracken saved in fine style a penalty awarded to the visitors, who continued making strenuous and oft-times over robust efforts. These were rewarded late in the second half with a goal scored by Bush at inside-left, after a slip by the Hampstead defence.
Harry and Field again proved their great value in defence, Lewis Smith was in good form at centre-half and Travers Day excelled on the right wing, giving a superlative display. Although very close attention was paid to them, Wise and Howell enjoyed a considerable share in the Hampstead success.
