Hampstead [Town], who had choice of ground for their second [qualifying] round English [F.A] Cup-tie with Waterlow's (Dunstable) decided to play away rather than disturb the Isthmian League fixture between Civil Service and Dulwich Hamlet on the Child's Hill ground.
They were accorded a fine reception from a record crowd for the Dunstable ground, which was in perfect condition and more like a cricket pitch than a football field. Such a change in ground conditions from the heavy home soil somewhat disconcerted the Hampstead team, both as to pace and ball control, and this largely accounted for their deficit in the first half, the home side crossing over with a two goals lead, both shots which gave Goodwin no chance to save. Throughout the opening stages the opposing defence dominated the Hampstead forwards, their goalkeeper playing particularly well and making two magnificent saves from Wise and Barnes.
On resuming Hampstead made great efforts to equalise, but the Bedfordshire champions' goal had a charmed existence, Swain, the custodian, saving his side time after time. During a period of constant pressure a home defender handled, but to the chagrin of the Hampstead supporters Wise shot wide of the post.
Immediately after, Waterlow's registered their third goal, but despite this further reverse Hampstead continued to play with dogged determination, and constant attacks finally resulted in Young, Seabrooke and Wise scoring in turn.
Hampstead finished more strongly than their opponents, and were distinctly unfortunate on several occasions.
