The return match on Boxing Day ended in a well-deserved win for Wealdstone by three goals to two, although they had not scored at half-time. Hampstead's team was unchanged. Again Smith gave a brilliant exposition of goal-keeping in the second half, during which period Wealdstone thoroughly over-ran their opponents.
In the first half Hampstead played really well, and early on Sherman had hard luck in not converting a fine centre by Moore. Judiciously fed by Potter, Sherman was a constant source of danger, but twenty-five minutes elapsed before Hampstead took the lead, Moore, receiving from Butland, finding the net with a shot which came off the post. Close upon the interval Young, with a brilliant shot, increased Hampstead's lead, laughter being caused by his turning a somersault after taking the kick.
Wealdstone hardly deserved to be two goals down at change of ends, as their forwards had done some good work, McGowan, at inside-left, being conspicuous. In the second half, however, Hampstead petered out, and although not overplayed to the same degree as on the previous day, had a gruelling time. The forward line was disjointed, Sherman and Moore alone doing anything of note. For a long time Smith kept the Wealdstone attack at bay, but at last he was beaten by Hoskins, the centre-forward, from a pass by Flint at outside-right. The equalising goal came from one of many corner kicks, the ball being so accurately placed that Smith had no chance, although he just touched it. McGowan was responsible for the third and winning goal with a really brilliant effort.
