Match Report

Hampstead's Athenian League game at Wealdstone on Christmas morning ended in a draw of one goal all. Hopkins, the Wealdstone centre-forward, from a pass by McGowan, found the net at the end of five minutes; and the equaliser came a quarter-of-an-hour later through the joint work of Sherman and Moore, the latter scoring with a fine shot. With the advantage of wind, Hampstead should have scored more than one goal. Territorially they had a big share of the play, but their forwards lacked that incisiveness which marked the work of the Wealdstone men, and Smith had far more difficult shots to deal with than Dunn. As a result of being sandwiched, Smith had a collapse which caused a brief stoppage, but upon recovering he played even more brilliantly, and Hampstead have mainly to thank him for getting one point.

At the beginning of the second half Wealdstone, with everything in their favour, looked like piling up a big score, but Smith played a game which has not been equalled by him since he began to keep for Hampstead. Corner kicks came to Wealdstone so frequently that one lost count of the number, but there must have been at least a score. This indicates the pressure that was put upon the Hampstead goal. Occasionally the visiting forwards would make headway, but they did not look like scoring until just on time. Had Wealdstone been beaten after showing their superiority in a most pronounced fashion, it would have been tragical.

Smith was undoubtedly the hero of the match. No player has more deserved an ovation than that which he received on retiring thoroughly spent. Though disappointed, Wealdstone supporters could not refrain from cheering.

F.R. Johnson, the old Southall captain, took George Bucci's place at centre-half. Little fault could be found with the defence, but it is evident that some changes will have to be made in the forward line. Butland does not find heavy grounds to his liking, and appears to have lost confidence; Potter is not getting the goals that one expects from an inside man; and Gardner is not fulfilling expectations at centre-forward.
