Match Report

Following upon their great win at Redhill in mid-week, Hampstead picked up two more points in their home game against Bromley on Saturday, thus reversing the result of a few weeks ago, when they only lost by an odd goal. From the mid-week team they made one change, Bucci taking the place of Joy at left-half.

Bromley were the superior team in the first few minutes, several raids on the Hampstead goal causing the defence uneasiness. Bromley scored after 10 minutes' play. Thomsett put across a fine centre from the right wing which Smith could only run out and punch. The ball fell at the feet of Coulson, who, with a lobbing shot, beat Smith, who had not recovered sufficiently to clear his lines.

After this reverse Hampstead took up the pressure. Boston several times put across fine drives just too far forward for either Evans or Minter to reach, but one of these had its reward. From a corner kick taken by Boston (the new left winger), Evans headed in to equalise. Then a brilliant run and centre on the right wing by Sear was headed over the bar by Butland. Little was seen of Bromley for the remainder of the first half, Hampstead doing most of the pressing, although they were unable to increase their score.

Early in the second half Minter put through a pass to Evans, who, after a tussle with a back, got away, drew out the goalkeeper, walked round him, and dribbled the ball through to give Hampstead the lead - a typical Evans goal.

Hampstead were not long in further increasing their lead. From a pass by Boston on the left, Evans scrambled the ball in. This goal incidentally gave Evans his hat trick. Bromley now broke away on the left through Drew, and after beating Bloxham and Dean, Drew put across a fine centre, which Smith cleared for a corner, the kick proving of no avail.

Minter then further increased Hampstead's lead with a first-time drive from a pass by Boston. He also got Hampstead's fifth with help from the same source. This proved to be the finish of the scoring. When putting across this last centre Boston was charged and fell on his hand and it appeared at the time that he had hurt it. It was revealed later that he had fractured his wrist. A truly unfortunate accident to a brilliant afternoon's work.

For Hampstead special mention must be made of the brilliant work of Boston, while the inside forwards also had a joy day. This was Evans's second hat trick in a week. For Bromley the best player was Drew. Centa, at centre-half, was good, but was not quite so strong in defence as he was in the previous game.
