Match Report

Golders Green met the Brigade of Guards in a friendly match at Claremont Road on Saturday. The result was a draw - three goals all.

On the whole the game was uninteresting. For long periods in the first half it was distinctly dull. It was not until the second half, when the Guards seemed to find their feet, that the play became faster. The teams were evenly matched and the goals were more the result of lightning breakaways than the culmination of concentrated attacks.

The home team's goal in the first few minutes had a serious effect on the visitors, and it looked as if Golders Green were going to have things all their own way. The Guards gradually recovered, however, and their physical fitness began to tell. Towards the end of the game the positions were reversed and Golders Green had to fall back and defend.

It was their team work which gave Golders Green the early advantage. Their frequent passing and well-thought-out attack was superior to the somewhat ragged play of the Guards.

The Guards had a distinct advantage in the matter of size and as the match progressed they did not seem to tire.

Within a few minutes of the kick-off Golders Green scored through F.P. Evans. There was a quick rush by the forwards, some cross-shooting in front of the goal, and the ball was in the net.

For a time the play was mostly in the Guards' half, but the visitors gradually pulled themselves together, but could not get dangerous. From the Golders Green forwards some fine passing was to be seen. This began to tell and the Guards' goalkeeper was kept busy. Ultimately a weak piece of play by Boston gave the Guards their opportunity and Scott sent in a good shot, which Godding was unable to reach, along the ground and into the net.

The home team were undeterred and within a moment or two of the kick-off were once again in front of their opponents' goal. The pace of the game was improving rapidly and the Guards were quickly finding their feet. Ding-dong play culminated in a surprising goal for Golders Green. The Guards had forced a corner and the players were bunched round goal. Godding cleared with a good shot. Edwards taking the ball, ran up the field and passed to F.P. Evans. The goalkeeper ran out, Evans passed back to Edwards, who shot into the net.

The Gaurds did not take long to retaliate. They executed an interesting forward movement in front of the goal and scored through Scott.

Shortly after the opening of the second half the visitors took the lead. They ran away and Sanford shot a strong ball which found the net.

Golders Green tried to reply and succeeded in forcing their way in front of the Guards' goal. F.P. Evans had a golden opportunity to score, but missed it. A few minutes later he had another chance, but the goalkeeper cleared.

After this they were driven back and had to fall on the defensive, but they broke away and Bucci scored to draw level before the final whistle went.

On the whole the closing minutes were interesting. The speed was maintained and the game was kept going right up to the final minute. Godding had a good bit of work to do and he did it well. His clearing of the ball, which was a preliminary to the scoring of the second goal for his side, was very fine.

Boston and Richardson were good at back, although Boston was not too steady at times. Bucci, Broadis and White were effective at half-back, F.P. Evans did well at centre-forward. Satisfaction was felt that Edwards was among the goalscorers.

The Guards had superior height and weight and seemed almost as fresh at the end as at the beginning, a tribute to their physical fitness.
