Speed and resource against an opposition not strikingly good, gave Golders Green a walkover victory when they entertained Redhill in the Athenian League on Saturday. Contrary to the previous week, Golders Green definitely had their shooting boots on, and they romped home to the tune of 7-0, only the splendid work of S.R. Smith, the goalkeeper who served Golders Green well for years and has now gone to Redhill, saving the visitors from a two-figure defeat, but the visitors must be credited with the fact that they played only ten men in the second half owing to an injury to Lister at inside-left.
Golders Green made a good start, kept the opposition at bay with fair ease most of the time, and Godding was rarely given enough work to keep him warm. The highlights of the game were provided in the second half, when Redhill gave the home defence their only brief spell of definite anxiety, and later when Golders Green helped themselves to a trio of goals in the space of seven minutes.
In the front line Drinkwater was restored to outside-left - his true position - in which he gave a tip-top display, and Golders Green might have done more scoring early on if he had been better served. F.P. Evans was in scoring form, but prone to dally with the ball. It was anticipated that R. White would be on the field again, but L.R. Ward took his place and gave a thoroughly good account of himself. Boston was always sound at right-back, and Broadis was in the thick of everything, working to good purpose all the time.
Redhill promised well in the opening stages with their long kicking, but after Godding had disposed of shots from Gibbs and Pagham, and Parrish had headed over, Golders Green fell into their stride and T.E. Evans ran through, but held on too long and passed to the centre when there was a good opening to the left. The halves kept the play well up, but the forwards were slow at shooting for a time and openings were wasted through Drinkwater being neglected. Redhill attacked again and Macdonald called upon Godding, but the pressure was not sustained and Golders Green took the play to the other end, where advantage ought to have been taking of miskicking by Rhodes. The game was young, however, when Golders Green began to demonstrate their superiority, and it speeded up after Drinkwater had opened the score, turning in a business-like centre from Breagan, Smith helping the ball in when it was actually under the bar.
From the kick-off Redhill worked into the home area and Lister sent in a brilliant shot for which Godding had to leap. Then came a couple of fine chances for the home team. Golders Green carried the ball up on the left and T.E. Evans passed to Freddy Evans, who drove just below the level of the crossbar, but Smith punched out. Golders Green forced a corner and Drinkwater gained possession, punting the ball neatly to F.P. Evans, who failed to net.
Bucci started the movement which gave Golders Green their second goal. He dropped a useful pass to T.E. Evans, who slammed it out to Drinkwater for him to centre again. F.P. Evans shot, Smith fisted the ball out too low, and Edwards finished it off, putting Golders Green two up.
T.E. Evans came near to netting with a header from a free kick by Broadis and he headed over from a pass by Drinkwater, but within half-an-hour of the start Golders Green scored their third through Breagan. Urpeth touched the ball as it passed the post, but it would have been a goal without his help.
Redhill came into the picture again, but Gibbs finished weakly after good team work on the right, and Godding dealt capably with a snap shot by Pagham. His clearance put the forwards on the move again and T.E. Evans worked close in before he was tackled by Urpeth and had to pass to Drinkwater. F.P. Evans received the centre but missed the mark, and when next he reached shooting range he sent the ball straight into Smith's arms. Shots followed from Breagan, Ward and T.E. Evans, but only a corner resulted.
The Redhill attack came into evidence again before half-time, but the only shot which might have caught Godding napping swerved a couple of inches the wrong side of the post.
Redhill sought to open the second half with a big push, but Ward stopped two likely movements and finally placed the ball well for a getaway by Edwards, who passed out to Drinkwater at the crucial moment. Drinkwater returned right to the centre of goal and Freddy Evans netted with a shot no goalkeeper could have hoped to save.
Boston, consistently sound, stopped another advance by Redhill and Drinkwater found an opening for himself, but lifted the ball over the top, and the visitors got away again, Godding saving from Pagham and Parrish shooting wide. But the visitors rarely gave cause for real anxiety till Macdonald beat the defence and put Pagham right in front of goal with the ball at his feet. The shot brought Godding down, but he scrambled the ball away, fisted out return shots from Saggers and Parrish, and finally conceded a corner. This came to nothing and the game veered to the other end once more. Edwards was unlucky with a good effort and Drinkwater was outrun when T.E. Evans passed too far ahead. Smith pushed the ball over from F.P. Evans for a corner and Rhodes intercepted a shot from Breagan before Redhill emerged from the defensive. Macdonald was the best trier in this next advance, but he skied the ball when well placed, and a few moments later a low shot by Parrish from rather far out found Godding ready. The Redhill forwards came again but could do no good and play veered round for Drinkwater and Edwards to try Smith. A shot through from Bucci also made him sit up and he did well to stop a grounder from Breagan. Just here Smith had a particularly busy time, but worked well and saved right on the line from T.E. Evans after neatly anticipating a shot from Drinkwater.
Then came Golders Green's rapid three. Breagan got in off T.E. Evans, part of the credit going to Drinkwater for trapping the ball well. Edwards took a handy pass from Breagan to net with surety, and F.P. Evans netted the final by making good use of a centre by Breagan. More goals looked certain from the Drinkwater-Evans combination, but Edwards shot over the top after good foundation work by T.E. Evans, and Smith held from F.P. Evans. Close on time F.P. Evans and Drinkwater forced a corner which the referee did not allow.
