Match Report

Meeting Uxbridge Town at Claremont Road on Monday evening, Golders Green obtained their third successive League victory. They won by six goals to two. The margin of four goals was unexpected seeing that already this season Uxbridge had drawn twice with Golders Green in the Middlesex Charity Cup and at the third attempt had won by the odd goal.

Golders Green thoroughly deserved their victory on Monday. We have seen few better displays this season from the team, which differed in two respects from that which won at Walthamstow two days earlier. T. Edwards was at centre-forward in place of T. Evans, and Bernard Joy, the International player, was at centre-half, Broadis being rested.

Without underrating the value of Broadis, it must be said that Joy was an acquisition, and the forwards were indebted to him for some beautiful passes. He also demonstrated his shooting powers. Edwards, too, played much better than usual.

Brown's clever work at Walthamstow made him the chief attraction, and although he was not so conspicuous in this match, he was in large measure responsible for the decisive victory. He fed the outside men assiduously, and never lost a chance of taking a shot himself when that seemed to be the better course.

Fallon has been having a poor time since his opening match, and some feared that he had been overrated. He disproved that on Monday, when he got three goals and assisted others to score. He has an awkward gait, and appears slow, but that he possesses talent cannot be disputed.

Breagan is on top form just now, and his goal - the fifth - was one of the best. Surrounded by three men, he yet managed to get in a shot which was too much for Sedgwick. It was also from Breagan's pass that Drinkwater scored the last goal. Drinkwater, though slow on occasions in getting in centres, played wonderfully well, his kicking from the corner flag being a feature.

Uxbridge was not such a poor side as the score denoted, in fact their football at times proved that their position in the League is a false one. It was unfortunate for them that Rowe, who last season played for Golders Green, put through his own goal. The defence was good, and the forwards treated the crowd with some beautiful footwork. But they met with a stubborn defence. Bucci, as on Saturday, was wonderfully good at left-half, and Bloxham, on the other wing, tackled well and gave much support to his wing forwards.

At back Boston was much in the limelight, and his speed when called upon to remedy a weakness on another's part was remarkable. A misunderstanding in the defence led to Uxbridge's first goal, but Miles again proved his worth.

Uxbridge pressed at the opening, Braithwaite making some fine shots, and had one of these scored a different story might have to be told. Boston made good clearances. Edwards, from a centre by Drinkwater, almost headed through, and a fine overhead kick into the goal area by the same player was commendable.

Scoring opened twelve minutes from the start, Fallon finding the net from a corner kick by Drinkwater, and a few minutes later he headed a second goal, this also coming from a pass by Drinkwater, who had cleverly eluded the opposing back.

Midway through this half T. Jones scored for Uxbridge. From that time until the interval there was little to choose between the teams, although the best shots came from Golders Green, one from Fallon being particularly good.

After changing ends (the teams did not leave the pitch) Golders Green soon went ahead, Rowe putting through his own goal. Fallon and Breagan followed with goals, three coming in less than fifteen minutes from the restart, and Drinkwater completed the scoring, as far as Golders Green were concerned, from a centre by Breagan. T. Jones, who had played well throughout, obtained Uxbrbidge's second goal ten minutes from the end.

End-of-the-season football is often lifeless, but this match was full of interest from beginning to end, and the players were as keen as if we were at the beginning of September.
