Match Report

Golders Green's principal fixture over the holiday was the Athenian League meeting with Hayes at Claremont Road on Saturday. It was an exciting match in that Hayes secured an early lead, Golders Green levelled up before the interval and went ahead in the first two minutes of the second half; but generally speaking the game did not provide a good deal of interest.

Hayes were too clearly outplayed. The visitors looked as good a team as Golders Green in every respect and had weight on their side, but although there was good tackling by the halves and backs and pretty accurate passing in front, Hayes simply did not know how to score. Their forwards suffered from unsteadiness in finishing, whereas Golders Green, after the early reverse, were always sharp on the mark and only sterling work by the Hayes' goalkeeper prevented a larger margin than two.

There were several changes in the home team. With T. Evans still away, Bucci played at centre-forward, Bloxham crossing over to take his place at left-half. J. Browne, a bright young product of Tottenham junior football, showed his quality at inside-left, and O'Connor did well on the right. Ward was played at right-half and was a sound man practically all the time.

Golders Green's goal was early in danger after a free kick had been badly cleared, and at the other end a header by O'Connor from one of Drinkwater's characteristic centres gave White a breathless moment. Golders Green were awarded a free kick for hands practically on the penalty line, and from this Broadis tested the goalkeeper. White also saved well from Bucci before the play swung back to the home territory, where Godding was alert to deal with a stinger from Chudley.

Hayes took the lead after Bucci had missed the net by no more than a couple of inches. From White's kick Richards passed forward and Hunter took possession of the ball 15 yards from the home goal. He was quite unmarked and beat Godding with a fine shot low down.

From this moment, however, Golders Green helped themselves to the best part of the play and never looked like losers. The equaliser came from Bucci, who turned the ball in neatly from Broadis and level terms were maintained until the interval, which arrived when Drinkwater was on the move with every chance of success.

A minute or two from the restart Bucci put Golders Green ahead, and the third goal came from Drinkwater as the climax to a thrilling scramble around the Hayes' goal. Breagan placed well from a corner, White fisted out from Browne and Bucci, and Broadis struck the crossbar. Drinkwater was the fourth marksman and slipped the ball in under White's outstretched arms.

Hayes attacked strongly at times, and Pickford was very persistent, but the Golders Green defence was invariably sound and the Hayes' forwards were now lacking in their earlier sparkle.

Brilliant work by Breagan and Drinkwater should have led to two more goals for Golders Green, but a lucky stretch of the leg by J. Ward intercepted Bucci's conversion of a pass by Drinkwater, and J. Browne scraped outside the upright after taking up a perfect centre by Breagan.
