Golders Green, after averting defeat for several weeks, succumbed at Bromley in an Athenian League match on Wednesday after getting two goals in the first quarter-of-an-hour. Breagan found the net with a beautiful shot at end of five minutes: and ten minutes later Fallon gave the ball to Browne, who, instead of passing to Breagan, as was expected, surprised Bromley by taking a shot himself and notched the visitors' second goal. Up to this time Golders Green had played really well. The passing was accurate and the shooting of a high standard. But Bromley, who from the start had shown that their position in the League was a false one, did not lose heart by these early reverses, and Reece, at outside-left, beat Godding at the end of twenty-five minutes. Nothing more was scored in the first half, and on the run of the play Golders Green just about deserved their lead.
Golders Green were completely subdued in the second half, and at the outside there could not have been more than half-a-dozen shots of any merit for Wingfield (a former Finchley goalkeeper) to deal with. The best of these came from T. Evans. Brind, at centre-forward, equalised the score at the end of a quarter-of-an-hour, and a little later Coulson, at outside-right, one of the most prominent men on the field, gave Bromley the lead, wich they held fairly easily.
Godding did wonderfully well to keep Bromley's score so low, because the constant pressure caused the defence to play somewhat erratically at times. Bucci played his usual good game, but Bloxham was missed at right-half. The forwards seldom got into working order in the second half, and it might have proved more profitable if the inside men had given the wingers more scope.
The game attracted a large crowd, and from the enthusiasm shown one would not have gathered that the season was almost at an end.
The return game will be played at Claremont Road next Thursday evening [May 2].
