Match Report

Golders Green supporters who were unable to secure tickets for the F.A. Cup final at Wembley found some satisfaction at Claremont Road, when they saw their club in such good form that Hayes were soundly beaten in the replayed Middlesex Charity Cup semi-final. On the previous Saturday, at Hayes, the clubs had drawn (one all), but at the second time of asking Golders Green put on a much better show, and won by five goals to love, although it was not until late in the first half that they scored their second goal. Up to that point Hayes, though never on top, promised to give Golders Green a close game, but two goals, one by Evans and the other by Fallon, in the course of a few minutes, practically settled the issue.

In the second half, playing against the wind, Golders Green got two more without reply, and their victory by five clear goals was their best performance in Cup matches this season.

Each side made one change from the previous week, Bloxham superseding Shorland and Long replacing Townsend.

Golders Green had the advantage of wind in the first half but that was not an unmixed blessing, the ball frequently going over the touchlines even with moderate kicking. Hayes found it difficult to get going, and on the few occasions when the halves were beaten they found George and [W.] Boston were more than their match. There was a good deal of clever work by the home forwards, and more than once they sold the dummy, Browne, as usual, manipulating the ball with extreme ingenuity. The interchange of places by Fallon and Evans soon told its tale. While Fallon was as nonchalant as ever, Evans was racing wherever the ball was to be found, and his pertinacity had its reward at the end of 15 minutes. Bloxham sent the ball across to F. Boston, from whose head it came to Evans, who completed the act with his head.

Golders Green continued to have a big share of the play. Broadis had one or two place kicks not far from the penalty line, but they went wide; Browne made some good efforts, and Fallon did a good deal of work with his head. One of Hayes' best attempts was made by Potts, Kimber doing well to clear at the expense of a corner. Several of Boston's centres missed their mark, but one shot almost scraped the crossbar.

Just when it was thought that the interval would come with Golders Green leading by the barest margin Evans scored a second goal, and then with a short pass, gave Fallon an easy chance of getting a third.

If the lead of three goals gave rather a false impression of the superiority of Golders Green, they had played the better football.

The second half saw no great change in play. The wind did not worry Golders Green, who were for the most part on the offensive, and credit must be given to Ward and Bamford for keeping the score down to five. As was the case at Hayes, Bamford, a young player, kicked splendidly.

From a pass by Bloxham, Evans obtained his third goal, and the scoring was completed by Fallon heading his second.

This decisive victory was the outcome of a good all-round exhibition, and though it may savour of ungraciousness to say so, the same standard of play in a few other matches would have made them much stronger rivals for the League championship.
