Match Report

Golders Green well deserved their victory against Uxbridge Town on Saturday at Claremont Road, but the score of 5-0 rather flatters them. Uxbridge started badly, and at the end of twenty minutes were three goals down, but from that point they played almost as well as Golders Green, but their luck was out. Uxbridge have won several cup-ties this season, but have yet to win a League match, and unless the side can be strengthened they promise to be once again in the bottom half of the table when the programme is completed.

It is interesting to note that only two of their team, T. Jones and F.C. Braisher, played in the League match at Claremont Road last April.

The ground was on the heavy side, a good deal of rain having fallen during the morning, and as a result the football was not of too high a standard. Golders Green adapted themselves to the conditions better than Uxbridge, and there was not that amount of tip-tapping with the ball to which we have been accustomed. This is largely due to the fact that Tommy Evans supplanted Fallon on the left wing, and though he may not be a polished player, he put more life into the attack and scored a goal. The other change in the home side was the introduction of George at left-back. Uxbridge did not test him so thoroughly as Walthamstow would have done the previous week, but it is hoped he will turn out to be the back the club has long been looking for.

As usual Trevor Jones (who was captain of the Uxbridge team) was one of the best men on the visiting side; Jack Richardson, at left-back, did not make many mistakes, but one cannot say that he was particularly brilliant. His past work for Golders Green ensured for him a good reception.

Golders Green started well, the first point worth mentioning being a centre by [F.] Boston which Browne just failed to head through. Another shot from the same quarter, this time from the corner flag, gave Breagan his chance, and with a neat header Golders Green were one up.

The Uxbridge attack could not get going. They certainly forced two or three corners, and once the ball hit the post, but Golders Green were far more dangerous, the combined work of Breagan and Browne being effective.

From a free kick for a foul just outside the penalty line Broadis drove the ball home, and a minute or two later Walker scored the third goal. From a centre by Breagan, Walker hit the post, but made no mistake on being given a second chance.

Three goals in twenty minutes was good going, and one visualised a third match during November in which Golders Green would figure in a double-figure match. But there were no more goals in this half, despite the many chances that were offered to both sides. Faggetter made many good attempts, but Kimber had a safe pair of hands, and showed great judgment. Just on the interval Braisher sent the ball across the goalmouth, but no one was there to give the finishing touch.

The second half brought two goals to Golders Green without reply. The first came from Evans seven minutes from the end, and Walker got the other.

A bad miss by Evans right at the start was followed by some really good efforts by others on Golders Green's side. Ward was not long unoccupied. He fisted out a good shot from [F.] Boston who, despite one or two ill-directed shots, gave a good deal of trouble: and Bloxham was within an ace of scoring with a header. There was a like attempt from Browne, with whom Breagan had worked well.

The best efforts for Uxbridge came from Jones and Faggetter. From a free kick taken by Jones, Kimber was well tested, and he also made several other clever clearanaces, but for the most part Uxbridge were on the defence.

The result, as we have said, rather flattered Golders Green, but they needed a tonic. That it came at the expense of Uxbridge, who are feverishly looking for their first League victory, was rather a pity.
