After their good display at Claremont Road the previous week, it was thought that with the same team Golders Green might be able to gain full points when they visited Romford for the return game on Saturday, but fate stepped in as it has done for the last three years when Golders Green visit Romford. It was not possible to play the strongest eleven, Bloxham and Broadis being absent for business reasons, and although Fallon and Bustard, who came into the side, both played well, the whole side seemed disorganised.
Adapting themselves better to the conditions of the ground, Romford were good value for their win, but the margin of four goals was more than the difference between the teams.
Opening up the game instead of close passing won the game for Romford, for both the wingers were plied with passes which they were able to turn to account. Romford opened the score after 10 minutes when Osborne, picking up a pass from Nottage in what appeared to be an offside position (both [W.] Boston and George stood and appealed to the referee), beat Kimber easily. Golders Green pressed after this and both F. Boston and Walker had hard drives cleared by Wingfield, who throughout the game played well, although at times he was lucky with his clearances.
Romford increased their lead through Thomas from a scrimmage in the Green goalmouth. Bucci, at centre-half, was playing a splendid game, and distributing the ball well, but the old weakness prevailed. There was far too much fancy dribbling by the inside men, Fallon and Browne, when a long pass out to the winger might have brought better results.
Just on half-time Walker was injured when attempting to score and was off the field for some minutes. [F.] Boston was the most dangerous forward. Several times he sent across hard centres for either [of] the backs to head away.
The second half opened with Golders Green trying hard to reduce the arrears and after 15 minutes they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Walker, who at the time was going right through and appeared sure to score. The kick was taken by F. Boston, who drove hard only to see Wingfield punch the ball over for a corner.
This was the turning point in the game. Profiting by this good fortune, Romford soon made matters safe by adding two more goals through Thomas and Osborne. Once with an open goal at his mercy Osborne punched the ball through when he had an easy opportunity to score.
Osborne, at centre-forward, was the pick of the Romford forwards. He distributed the ball well to both his wingers. Nottage, at centre-half, was a stumbling block for Walker, while both the backs were strong in defence and often saved dangerous shots when Wingfield was beaten.
On the Golders Green side Bucci was outstanding. He played a sterling game at centre-half, while George, at left-back, more often than not beat Patterson, the International right winger, for the ball. Both the Bostons played well; the weak links appared to be Breagan and Fallon.
