Golders Green closed their League programme on a disappointing note, Redhill beating them at Claremont Road on Saturday by one goal to nil. Redhill's goal was scored by L. Williams, at outside-left, in the second half. A shot was stopped by J. McIntyre, who was keeping goal in place of Kimber, but Williams caught the ball on the rebound and scored easily.
McIntyre made an able substitute. He had a keen sense of anticipation, and handled the ball cleanly. He showed judgment when running out for the ball, and on several occasions cleverly outwitted the opposing forwards.
Two other changes were made in Golders Green's team, G. Bucci and A. Broadis standing down in favour of J. Shorland and E. Duffield, the centre-half position being filled by J. Bloxham. Bloxham was undoubtedly in the wrong position, and the weakness of the half-back line told its tale. Not only were the halves weak in defence, but the forwards did not get that amount of support which was expected, and they were all at sixes and sevens.
Fallon put in most shots, but most of them were extremely weak. The best came from F. Boston and T. Evans, but they were few in number. From Boston we expect much. One shot in the first half was as good as we have ever seen, but he was exasperating time after time in the second period when Golders Green were fighting desperately for a goal. Perhaps "desperately" is too strong a word, because for the most part there was a tendency to take matters calmly. Championship honours were not at stake, and some players could not forget that two Cup finals had yet to be played.
S.R. Smith kept goal for Redhill, and though he has seen stormier periods when fighting for Golders Green on the same ground, there was strong evidence that he has not yet lost his cunning. He looked particularly pleased that he had kept a clean sheet against his former club.
While Golders Green's display was not inspiring, the Redhill side did not play well enough to suggest that they would win, but having once scored, they showed up in a much better light. As was the case with Golders Green, they missed many chances, although as a line we preferred their forwards to the home five.
