Golders Green's friendly match with the 'Spurs' junior side at Claremont Road on Saturday caused one again to regret that Golders Green had not such a side earlier in the season as they have been putting out recently.
Though the game was not quite so good to watch as the recent encounter with Chelsea "A", there was plenty of interest in the play, and Golders Green did well to win by the only goal scored.
The stars of the home team were A.S. Peverell, at centre-half, and W. Pidgeon, at left-back. But for the backs and centre-half, indeed, Tottenham would have stood a good chance of winning by several goals, though Barlow was in good form and did a lot of work well.
Walker having been chosen for the League representative game, Bucci took the centre-forward position, but he was really wasted here. Bloxham, injured and unlikely to appear again this season, was replaced by Ward, who did not give a very good account of himself. But as Caswell's deputy, Pidgeon showed great promise at the outset and fully justified the confidence placed in him by a performance of consistent merit throughout the game. Webster and Sexton were both fit again, and were included in the front line. Although the only goal was scored by Breagan, it was Boston who gave the impression that he would do all the damage, and he had one or two very good tries at goal.
The 'Spurs made two changes in their team, G. Baron going in goal in place of Gilroy, and Reeve taking the left-half position.
The 'Spurs won the toss and played with the wind. They made ground on the left almost at once, and Barlow was called upon by Jeffrey, who was the most worrying of the forwards during most of the attacks. From the clearance Davis, who played a fine game at left-half, got Golders Green on the move and swung in a good centre, but Nicholson intercepted the ball. F. Boston reached Baron from a throw-in, but the goalkeper cleared easily, and a beautiful piece of play folowed on the 'Spurs left wing, ending in a shot from Tomkins. Barlow punched out and then held a smart opportunist shot from Jeffrey.
At the other end F. Boston and Bucci were showing up well. Boston was brought down in the penalty area and the referee was appealed to, but a foul was not given. Golders Green maintained the pressure for a time, and F. Boston sent a grand shot close across the goalmouth and Breagan forced a corner, from which Boston shot wide.
Webster was displaying some pretty touches, and Davis was showing up well.
Baron brought off three saves in rapid succession before Golders Green were driven back. Then Morris nearly broke through in the centre and Jeffrey worried the defence, finally reaching Barlow with a high shot which he handled cleanly. Barlow also cleared from Cox and Reeve, and after a brief excursion to the other end, in which Breagan forced a fruitless corner, Tomkins missed a grand chance for the 'Spurs by lifting the ball over the bar.
Golders Green had a near escape when, after Barlow had fisted out from Jeffrey, Evans shot right across the mouth of goal with Barlow down. Morris was given a useful forward pass by Reeve, but missed the ball.
At this stage the Golders Green positional play was poor, while the 'Spurs were giving a nice exhibition of passing and finding their men.
When Golders Green got into stride again, Boston deserved a goal, striking the side of the net with a hard, low drive after beating the defence.
Then Ward, who had been somewhat disappointing, lost the ball through hesitating, and Tomkins slipped through, forcing Barlow to concede a corner. From this Tottenham nearly took the lead, but Pidgeon cleared while Barlow was out of place.
Peverell pushed through a pass at the other end, from which F. Boston centred to Bucci, who might have scored with a first-timer, but he passed the ball along to Breagan and the opportunity was lost.
Close on half-time the visitors set up a hot attack, during which the Golders Green crossbar was struck three times. W. Boston eventually cleared.
The interval arrived with no score.
After the change-over some good play by Webster led to Ward having a try at goal, but Baron held the ball. Some useful passes were going through to Bucci, but he could not turn them to asccount, though he did test Baron once. F. Boston was frequently promising a goal, and from a long pass out from Webster he skimmed the ball just above the bar. Webster was not at his best, and it appeared that he was not happy on the hard ground, but he did work another opening for Boston, who drove in a sparkling shot which Baron saved.
The 'Spurs were working hard and well on the left wing, and Barlow had a lot of work to do from time to time, but Golders Green deserved their lead when it came through BREAGAN. There had been a feeling that Breagan at his best could not beat Nicholson, but he made perfect use of a quick pass from Bucci and snapped in a low shot which had Baron well beaten.
The honours were well shared between Breagan and Bucci, and they nearly brought it off again shortly afterwards. Bucci also gave F. Boston an opening, but a shot which would have carried the goalkeeper into the net with the ball streaked across in front of the posts. Boston shot over the top before the Tottenham forwards came into the picture again. Then Barlow was often in action, and Golders Green had a lucky survival when Morris miskicked when Barlow was out of goal, after saving from Jeffrey. By the time Morris recovered W. Boston was between the posts and cleared the shot.
Golders Green suffered several injuries during the game, the victims being Peverell, F. Boston (twice injured), Davis and Webster.
