Match Report

By beating the Fulham "A" team at Claremont Road on Saturday, Golders Green have, as it swere, achieved a hat-trick, For this was their third successive win over the " professionals ".

Golders Green lost the toss and started off kicking away from the pavilion. The kick-off was not a very propitious one, for instead of making a long pass to the wing, Walker only tapped the ball, and Fulham were able to make an almost instantaneous breakaway. The half-backs stopped them, however, and Davis passed the ball to Bucci, who took it up field and sent it on to Boston. This brought the play to the Fulham end of the field, and an early attempt to score was made.

The visitors cleared through Williams to Dean, and then to Kavanagh, but after passing all the rest of the defence, Kavanagh was stopped by Pidgeon, the left-back. He succeeded in clearing through Davis to Boston, who made a clear run down field, and, with a very good shot, almost succeeded in scoring.

Pidgeon and Caswell were both playing a good game at full-back. The way the Fulham men trapped the ball was worthy of note, especially as the ground was so hard.

The early part of the play devolved upon Golders Green's left wing, where Bucci, at inside, and Boston, at outside-left, were doing yeoman service, using every possible opening for attack. For short permiods, however, the play passed to the right wing, and Breagan beat Parry and Edwards, and before he was tackled by Freeman, the left-back, he shot in front of the goal. Sexton was well placed for a clear shot, but missed a wonderful chance to score.

L. Dean wsas the most dangerous of the Fulham forwards, on the right wing, but he was so well marked by Davis that he seldom managed to force his way through.

On another occasion Boston made a very fine breakaway, taking the ball from midfield on the wing, right past the half-backs and the right-back (Goodyear), before shooting. He had waited just too long, however, for Freeman came over and foiled the attempt to score.

Fulham returned the compliment, but Golders Green pressed hard and forced the game away from their goal, finally giving Boston another chance after a period of play in front of the Fulham goal. He made a beautiful shot, but Greygoose was on hand and saved expertly.

A further attack by Fulham, which might have proved serious, was averted when Purnell was given offside. Then Weaver passed to Boston, who made another of his swift dashes towards the Fulham goal. He almost succeeded in getting through, but was stopped by a sliding tackle by Goodyear. Although there was evidently no doubt in the referee's mind about the cleanness of this tackle, the crowds in the stand thought a foul had been committed, and feeling ran high for some minutes, especially as a similar tackle had deprived Boston of the ball a short time previously.

Play continued on much the same lines throughout the first half, neither team appearing to be able to press home an advantage, although both were fighting hard. On one occasion Barlow was almost deceived by a high bouncing ball coming for the goal, but he reached it in time. A foul by Goodyear, who tripped Walker, gave Boston a penalty shot, but he was not able to score.

Caswell, who was playing an excellent game, was able to save several goals when Barlow had run out and come to grief.

Half-time came with no score for either team, but three minutes after they returned to the field Golders Green remedied this, and a shot from WALKER beat Greygoose. He received an excellent pass from B reagan.

A new player came on to the field for Fulham "A" at half-time. This was Heron, who took Purnell's place at inside-right.

Within a minute Fulham had forced a corner, which almost beat Barlow. This advantage was followed up, and Kavanagh brought the scores level.

Sexton began to play a better game in this half, and was now pulling his weight, but F. Boston seemed to be having some trouble with his knee, eventually receiving attention from St. John Ambulance men.

Golders Green xzecond goal came from Breagan after some very pretty play in which he and Walker tricked the whole defence. BREAGAN made a beautifully timed shot on receiving the pass from Walker.

Eight minutes from time Bucci increased the score to 3-1 after Weaver had taken a free-kick, awareded for a foul by Edwards against Sexton. The ball was cleared, but not sufficiently, and BUCCI took advantage of a perfect opportunity to score.

During the remainder of the game Fulham could not keep Golders Green out of their area, and the final score came when ROZIER, the centre-half, tried to clear by skying the ball. It came down at the wrong angle, however, and bounced over Greygoose's head into the net. This was the only goal of the match which was not fought for.

Good team work was evident throughout the match.
