On Saturday Wealdstone visited Claremont Road to contest with Golders Green the right to enter the semi-final of the Herts and Middlessex League Cup, and the home side succumbed by the odd goal of three.
All the scoring occurred in the first half. Golders Green took the lead when Stroud raced through and put the ball across for Goodchild to dash in and shoot past Doherty. Wealdstone equalised almost at once when, following a good combined movement, Charlton cented across for Lewis to net. Almost on half-time Dolding beat Bucci and again Lewis converted the centre.
In the second half a vital incident occurred which certainly affected the outcome of the game. Wealdstone pressed for the most part, but on occasions the Green broke away. One such movement saw Goodchild beat Leeming and centre across to Pulling, who gathered and was forcing his way through when he was fouled in the penalty area. The ball went to Stroud, who shot hard and true into the net. As he shot, however, the referee blew for a penalty, so the goal was not allowed. The spot kick was unwisely entrusted to Pulling, who had just been badly shaken, and he shot wide.
Golders Green contributed to their own defeat by refusing to kick the ball hard, persisting for the most part in close passing, for which the state of the pitch was entirely unsuited. Their inside forwards showed bad lack of thrust.
