Match Report

There was a smaller attendance than usual at Claremont Road last Saturday, but those present were rewarded by a thrilling and sensational recovery by Golders Green who, after being two goals down, ultimately defeated the powerful Hitchin Town side 4-2, to reach the Final of the Herts and Middlesex League Challenge Cup.

The Green won the toss and, somewhat surprisingly, gave Hitchin the benefit of the wind which was blowing steadily towards the pavilion goal. Roberts was soon in action and made some good clearances, but after nine minutes' play, Saunders beat Malcolm for the ball and scored from close range. The visitors continued to press and, after half an hour, a fine combined movement by the Hitchin attack led to Saunders netting their second, to give them a 2-0 lead at half-time.

On resuming, Golders Green began to play with more dash, going in to meet the ball, as Hitchin had done in the first half - instead of waiting for it to come to them. After a quarter of an hour, Cochrane, facing away from goal, received from Maloney. He hooked the ball cleverly over his head and it entered the far corner of the net with Jones hopelessly out of position.

The equaliser came 10 minutes later, after heavy pressure. Robshaw passed the ball to Gallacher, who pushed it forward beautifully for Griffiths to score a great goal with a first-time ground shot as Jones came out.

Except for a few breakaways, Hitchin were well held, and after 28 minutes, Griffiths gained possession and passed to Cochrane who shot home to give the Green the lead.

Hitchin tried hard to recover and the Green's defence was well tested, but stood firm. Fisher and Bossoms played strongly during this period, while Topp was a brilliant right half. Then the Green came again, Griffiths gained possession and passed to Maloney, who sent the ball in for Fair to score the fourth goal, three minutes from time.

Golders Green thus qualified for the Final in which they meet Barnet on Finchley's ground on April 28th.
