Match Report

Golders Green must be considered unfortunate in losing by the only goal scored in the 1st Round London Senior Cup Replay v. Dulwich Hamlet at Claremont Road last Saturday.

The Green had to find a last minute substitute for Finch, who was unable to "make it," and completed their side by moving Stroud to outside right and introducing a newcomer, highly recommended to the Club, in J. Greaves at outside left. Greaves was not a success, and it was soon apparent that he was out of his class. To what extent this upset the forward line, it is difficult to say, but the Greens' vanguard once again failed to function smoothly. The inside men certainly could not be blamed for this, as both Robshaw and Bucci got through some fine work. There was no fault to find with the home defence, which was on top form. Roberts in goal, though some appeared to think he might have prevented Dulwich's point, played a great game, and if he was at fault there, made brilliant amends at other times. Fisher and Bossoms were sound backs, Bossoms getting through an enormous amount of work with great skill, vigour and determination. The middle line was good, Topp being the best wing half on the field.

The game was hard, fast and thrilling - a real cup-tie, clean and sporting. Early on, it appeared as if the Green should have been awarded a penalty, when Bucci was brought down in the area, but the referee waved play on. Gosnay soon afterwards gathered an awkward low cross shot from Robshaw, before Dulwich got through after a struggle, only for Topp to save an awkward situation.

Then, after 25 minutes, came the all important goal. A high ball bounced badly for Gallacher, and he was unable to clear: the ball went to Jover only a few yards out of goal; Roberts was there, but before he could shape for it, the winger's first time effort went between his legs into the net.

Near half-time, Bossoms headed out from under the bar, and then the Green got right through, but Fair, only a couple of yards from goal, with the ball at his feet, was unable to get in a shot.

Soon after half-time, a shot from Fair was turned by Gosney for a corner. For a time there was a ding dong struggle, the game flowing swiftly from one end of the field to the other. Two brilliant saves by Roberts were followed by a great clearance by Gosney of a header from Bucci following a corner. Towards the end it was all Golders Green, but, though the Hamlet goal was almost bombarded, the attack could not penetrate the visitors' defence.
