Match Report

Golders Green visited the "Hare and Hounds" ground for their League match with Leyton last Saturday. They were strongly represented, for though Finch was not available, they had the services of Goodchild, home on short leave, and he played an excellent game.

The pitch was in a deplorable condition - the referee consulted for half an hour before deciding that it was playable. It was icy and rutted, with thaw occuring on the surface. The players had great difficulty in keeping their feet, while the ball would frequently strike a hard rut and bounce off at a most unexpected angle. Football was out of the question - the only thing to do was to kick the ball good and hard towards goal.

After 20 minutes, Bossoms made the fatal mistake of trying to dribble on a particularly bad patch. He was robbed by Biggs, who centred across for Ashmore to give Leyton the lead. Just before half-time, Robshaw, an extremely clever inside right, got his head to a corner from Stroud, and the ball whizzed just over the bar, with Gibbs beaten - a fine effort which deserved a better fate.

After the interval the Green pressed for a while, but still could not get past Gibbs. After a quarter of an hour, following a free kick, the ball went to and fro in front of the Greens' goal, finally going out to Biggs who scored to put Leyton two up. Almost at once, the visitors replied. Stroud, for a change, put over a centre, though too near goal: the ball ran along the crossbar, and went out to Goodchild who opened the Greens' account.

A couple of minutes later the Greens were awarded a penalty for hands, but Bossoms, usually so certain with his kicks, put the ball just wide of the post. This was undoubtedly the turning point of the game.

After half an hour, a free kick was awarded to the Green, and with the whole side backing up, the ball was cleared down the field for Leyton to break away. Biggs gained possession and netted the home side's third goal, to make the game safe.
