There was an excellent attendance at Claremont Road last Saturday to see Golders Green share the Herts and Middlesex League points with Barnet, in a match which ended in a 1-1 draw. The spectators witnessed a great struggle with some sparkling football on both sides.
Barnet in the first half, with the wind in their favour, were the more dangerous side, but after the interval the Green had most of the play and towards the end their efforts brought the crowd to a frenzy of excitement: only brilliant goalkeeping by Powell enabled Barnet to snatch a point.
Barnet were a good, well balanced side, whose speedy movements and first time kicking were always potentially dangerous. But again Bossoms at left back and Topp at right half were prime movers in thwarting Barnet's vanguard: they were well supported by Gallacher at centre half, while in the Green's attack Barnard, home on leave, gave a dashing display.
The Green scored after three minutes' play, when Fair was fouled in the penalty area, and Bossoms scored from the spot. Barnet quickly retaliated and set up some lightning attacks. McDonald, with a good opening from a pass by Jordan, skied the ball from a few yards out: after a quarter of an hour, however, they were rewarded: Reilly beat Fisher and centred for McDonald lo level the scores.
After the interval a ding-dong struggle took place, but the home side became more and more aggressive and for a long period had the Barnet defence working desperately hard.
Halfway through this period, Barnard was fouled when going through and Powell only just parried Maloney's free kick for a corner, from which he saved Barnard's shot. With about five minutes to go, Barnard got through and shot hard for the corner of the net. There was a great shout of "Goal" from the crowd, but, somehow, Powell managed to get to the ball before it crossed the line. In the last two minutes the Green had two corners, but could not convert either for the deciding goal.
