Golders Green suffered their heaviest reverse of the season at Green Pond Road, Walthamstow, last Saturday, going down to the powerful Avenue side 6-1.
In extenuation, it may be said that the Avenue had an inspired day, while the Green were below strength, since Martinson was absent, ill, and neither Gallacher nor Finch was 100% fit. While the score exaggerates the difference between the two teams, the Avenue's well-balanced side played brilliant football and kept the Green's defence at full stretch.
Bossoms again played a great game at left back for the visitors, and there was no better defender on the field; Topp, too, played strongly and well, while Maloney did all that was asked of him by shadowing and checking the still elusive Jim Lewis {Snr], the mainspring of the Avenue's attack.
Walthamstow opened the score after 13 minutes, when the ball was sent across from the right to Palmer, standing unmarked - Fisher, throughout, tended to give him too much "rope" - and the outside left slammed the ball into the net.
Four minutes later, Childs was adjudged to have handled in the penalty area and Bossoms made no mistake with the spot kick, levelling the scores.
Over half an hour elapsed before the Avenue took the lead, Palmer once more being the successful marksman, while five minutes later Groves made it 3-1. Just before half time the Avenue scored a fortunate and most peculiar goal. Roberts, whose kicking of late has become careless and slovenly, taking a goal kick, sent the ball against Groves' head from which it unexpectedly rebounded into the net.
After the interval, Simmonds made a fine save from Fair, and Childs kicked a shot from Finch off the goal line. Then the Avenue broke away and Palmer completed his "hat trick" after seven minutes play to bring the score to 5-1.
The Green held their own for a long period after this and were rather unfortunate not to have scored once or twice, though bad tactics on the part of the forwards contributed to their failure. Then, just before the end, Avenue were awarded a penalty for hands, from which skipper Jim Lewis scored the sixth goal.
