Match Report

Golders Green secured two further Herts and Middlesex League points at Claremont Road on Saturday and so maintained their challenge to the League leaders, Hitchin Town (whom they visit next Saturday). But they had to fight very hard to secure the verdict, which was in doubt almost until the end.

Not that there was any question as to their superiority in skill and the finer points, but St. Albans, by their vigorous tactics and rushing methods, made good football impossible. The home side soon saw this and did the only thing in reply, giving measure for measure. As a spectacle the game suffered, and the refereeing was the poorest seen for a long time.

Golders Green attacked from the kick-off, and H. Burke stopped a shot with Gillians out of goal, while the St. Albans goalkeeper saved well from Gallacher. Then St. Albans broke away on the left, and from Pipe's pass Evans beat Roberts with a soft shot to give the visitors the lead after ten minutes' play.

After 35 minutes, Golders Green equalised. A great effort by Finch gave Fair his chance, and he scored from close range. Half time came with the score 1-1.

On resuming, the Green again set up a series of hot attacks, and after ten minutes' play took the lead, Gallacher heading home a well-taken corner by Finch. Five minutes later the score was 3-1, Goodchild crashing home a great shot after receiving a pass from Cox. Within a few minutes St. Albans reduced their arrears. They broke away on the right, and [R.] Burke, working in, beat Roberts to make the score 3-2.

For a time the visitors took up the running, but could not get the equaliser. In the later stages, the Green set up some hot attacks, one shot in particular, from Gallacher, hitting the crossbar and rebounding into play with Gillians beaten. There was no further scoring, the Green thus gaining the verdict by the odd oal of five.
