Golders Green came up against their sternest opposition so far this season, when they visited Southall, who stood 3rd in the Herts and Middlesex League, last Saturday. The Green were without their centre forward, Fair, who was away on holiday : Roy Stroud deputised. Bossoms, however, was back again, and played his usual sterling game in defence.
In a performance of this description, with the whole side playing splendid football, it is difficult to single out individuals for special praise. But a word is due for the clean, sure goalkeeping of Roberts, the rugged defence of Bossoms, the steady and thoughtful play of Malcolm and the brilliant exhibition of winger's work by Finch.
Southall, whose side included ex-Golders Green players in Stidder, Breagan and Snazel, put up a dour defence, though throughout the game, the Green were playing the better football. But the visitors held only a slender lead at half time, and Southall went very near to equalising once or twice. They were gradually worn down, however, and in the last twenty minutes, they cracked completely.
The Green opened the score after a quarter of an hour's play. As a result of an excellent movement, Finch put to Stroud from whose pass Gallacher scored.
A ding dong struggle ensued, Roberts bringing off brilliant saves from Potter, Snazel and Dowse, while Stidder was called upon to deal with several awkward situations at the other end. Half time, however, came without any change in the score sheet.
A hard struggle developed early in the second half, with Southall straining every nerve for the equaliser, and the Green trying to keep them at bay.
After just under half an hour's play, following clearance of a corner to Southall, Golders Green broke through. Finch sent the ball in to Cox and from his pass Goodchild scored from close range.
Five minutes later, with the Green pressing hard, Stroud passed out to Finch. Stidder parried the shot but the ball fell at Cox's feet and he only had to put it into the net, for the Green's third.
About five minutes before the end - it was all Golders Green now - the visitors were awarded a penalty for hands. Bossoms took the kick and made no mistake, for the fourth.
So ended a match which demonstrated to the full the improvement which has been effecyed in Golders Green's XI this season. The Green now occupy the position of runners up in the League Table, and have a game in hand over Hitchin Town, the leaders.
