Leading 2-0 with only 14 minutes left for play, Hendon F.C. looked set for victory at Hitchin on Saturday. Then the home team rallied and scored three goals in eight minutes, to gain both League points.
Before Hendon scored their first goal, half-way through the second half, there was little in the play of either side to excite the spectators.
The forwards found it difficult to control the ball on the slippery surface in front of goal, and both defences seemed to dominate the play.
In the first half, however, facing a strong wind, the visitors appeared to be the better balanced team, with Cochrane outstanding on the left wing. Repeatedly the diminutive winger, by perfect ball control, beat Hitchin's right-back to put over some well-placed centres which Hawkins invariably cleared before the Hendon forwards could become dangerous.
Avis did get through on one occasion, but after drawing Hawkins out of his goal he shot wide.
At the other end Watson was prominent with a fine clearance from Mockler, and Kemp brought off two brilliant saves from hard shots by Ward and Wingate.
In the second half the play speeded up, and Avis and Pateman tried hard to open the score.
Hitchin began to have more of the play, and from an attack on the left wing Ward's shot dropped on to the cross-bar, and Adams cleared the rebound before Mockler could get in a shot.
Good play by Avis saw Reay find the net, but the inside-right was given offside.
From the kick Fontana got the ball and passed to Cochrane, who turned it into the goal to open the scoring.
Six minutes later, fine play be Stroud gave Reay an opportunity, and the inside-right headed into the net.
Hendon's lead was short-lived, however, for after Adams had miskicked into his own goal, Pateman equalised and Brown gave Hitchin victory with a brilliant shot into the top of the goal, with Kemp well beaten.
