A goal by Roy Stroud eleven minutes from the end of extra time brought Hendon the Middlesex Charity Cup for the fourth successive season when they defeated Hayes 3-2 at Wealdstone on Saturday.
Though they were rather fortunate to be level after 90 minutes' play, there was no doubt that Hendon were the better team in the extra period, when superior staying power made them faster on the ball and more dangerous in front of goal.
In the first half, after opening in grand style and in 20 minutes finding the net on two occasions with what appeared to be good goals, the team fell away and only Cochrane, Adams and Kemp revealed their true form.
The disppointment of having one of the goals disallowed, as well as several decisions against them (including a penalty which was converted into a goal) may have affected Hendon's play. At any rate, from then on they gave only brief glimpses of the form of which they are capable.
Spurred by their goal, Hayes came more into the game and soon took the initiative. Weakness in front of goal and superb headwork by Adams, aided by Kemp's brilliant handling of the ball, prevented Hayes from scoring more than two goals.
Hendon opened the scoring through Cochrane, and found the net again five minutes later when Stroud took the ball to the goalline and crossed for Reay to head home. However, Reay was judged offside, and the goal was disallowed.
Ten minutes later, Hayes equalised from the penalty spot, and just after half-time took the lead through Patterson.
Hendon went all out for an equaliser and succeeded six minutes later when Avis converted a pass from Fontana.
In the last period of extra time Hendon made a forward switch, Avis going to outside left, Cochrane inside and Reay leading the line.
This move brought results, for in the fourth minute Stroud fastened on to the ball to give Hendon the cup with a rasping cross shot into the corner of the net.

While Hendon retain the trophy [the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup] for another year with the odd goal in five scored in extra time at Wealdstone last Saturday, Hayes were generally the better side. Fielding a resourceful forward line, the locals deserved to win - and would have reached this objective had their opponents been less fortunate in selecting R. Kemp (in whom Arsenal F.C. are interested) as their goalkeeper.
Against the run of play, Hendon took the lead with a goal by A. Cochrane in the seventh minute, the ball dropping into the Hayes net over Simmonds' head. Nevertheless Hayes were playing a confident game and deserved an equalising goal. This, however, materialised in the shape of a penalty for an infringement by a Hendon defender in the twenty-fifth minute. D. Cameron made no mistake from the spot and the interval arrived with neither team adding to their score.
G. Patterson gave Hayes an early lead in the opening minute of the second half, but Hendon once again drew level six minutes later, when R. Avis bustled the ball past the goalie from a free-kick.
The game was lost (and won) in the fourth minute of the final session of extra time when Hendon found a gap in the Hayes defence for R. Stroud to rush through and score.
