Match Report

The race for the Isthmian League championship was blasted wide open on Saturday when we dropped two most valuable and vital points to Wimbledon at Plough Lane. There is now every chance that the title will not be decided until the very last game of a most memorable and exciting season.

It has been a see-saw battle all the way along the line as we have struggled with Wimbledon for supremacy. Whichever way the scales are finally tipped, all will agree that we, in our first season in the Isthmian League, have not been disgraced.

It was a sorry story at Wimbledon in a game full of incident. Though without Gerry O'Rourke, who had to cry off just before the game on doctor's orders, we managed to take the lead with a beautifully headed goal by Jimmy Quail in the 12th minute.

But tragedy struck in the 20th minute when Peter Slade, after colliding with goalkeeper Mike Kelly, was carried off on a stretcher with damaged ribs.

With now only ten men it was not surprising that we lost some of the initiative and Wimbledon equalised with a penalty before the interval. After saving Roy Law's effort with a fearless dive John Swannell was said to have moved by the referee before the kick was taken, so Law was given a second chance, from which he made no mistake.

Slade made a heroic return in the second half, but, in so much pain, was little more than a passenger. Eddie Reynolds, who was well held by Geoff Riddy, netted the second half winner for Wimbledon. But, by George, we certain deserved a point!
