Match Report

These games with arch-rivals Enfield are undoubtedly the tit-bits of the soccer season and the match at Enfield, when we triumphed by 4 goals to 2, lived up to the reputation for skills, thrills and spills that these meetings usually produce.

The game was fast and furious with Enfield holding the edge in the first half due to their wider use of the field and their better ball distribution. Wing to wing play, with Terry Howard, in the unfamiliar role of centre forward, constantly switching with Roy Thomas son the right, brought out the best from our defence where John Swannell and Dave Hogwood excelled.

In comparison our attack appeared lop sided with Roy Drake, brought in at outside left for Danny Lakey, who has been labouring under the handicap of a severe cold in recent matches, reluctant to cross the ball first time.

However, we went into the lead in the 29th minute when Geoff Riddy headed onto the crossbar for Laurie Churchill to cleverly nod the rebound into the far corner of the goal. This reverse stung Enfield to greater effort and within ten minutes they were on equal terms as the result of a header from outside left Prior from a Terry Howard cross from way out on the right wing.

Then right on half time Day converted a penalty for a handling offence to give the home side a well deserved lead.

Hendon started the second half with the same formation and without any improvement in their play and it was obvious some move was necessary if we were to preserve our unbeaten record.

Then Hyde took the left-wing spot, with Drake at centre forward, and the game gradually swung Hendon's way. A low free kick by Hyde, taken well out on the wing, saw Jimmy Quail turn the ball into the net for the equaliser and in the 23rd minute Churchill stunned the home crowd with his tenth goal of the season to put Hendon in the lead.

We were now playing with much more purpose and it was no surprise when a fizzer from Dave Hyde, that was well taken by Mitchell just inside the far post, was followed by a rocket from the makeshift outside left that left the goalkeeper completely helpless.

A sweet victory that took us to the top of the league table.
