Another magnificent fighting display on the part of our lads, after being reduced to ten men for practically the whole of the second half, enabled us to complete the league double over Wealdstone last Saturday.
The composure shown by the whole team after Wealdstone had twice equalised and threatened to take command of the game was really amazing, and it was this self-possession that enabled us to take both points as the result of a wonder goal by Peter Howard, when he fastened on to a long ball from the right wing, brought it down with his left foot and flashed a terrific right foot drive into the top angle of the goal that Goymer never had a hope of saving.
The game was fought with cup-tie fervour with Wealdstone showing the neater approach work and our boys appearing the more dangerous in front of goal.
Geoff Riddy dominated the centre field until an ankle injury forced his retirement shortly after the interval.
Scorning defensive tactics, our lads went on the attack, with Jimmy Quail and John Evans running themselves into the ground in their efforts to force a victory, and Roy Sleap, Bobby Cantwell, Dave Hogwood and Micky Cooper giving wonderful support.
Laurie Churchill opened the scoring and John Evans added the second with a banana shot that flashed past Goymer like a rocket, then followed Peter Howard's match winner.
