Match Report

Those who were privileged to see the game will readily admit that whilst the quality of football provided did not reach the high standard expected from the two top amateur teams in the country, the effort put into the game produced more than the usual share of excitement, with the tension mounting as the game progressed.

Certainly our followers will never forget the last fifteen minutes of the game, with our lads thrown back on defence and Leytonstone giving everything they had in an effort to wipe out a two goal deficit.

The last minutes were agonising, with the referee playing over four minutes injury time and the whistle coming as a welcome relief.

It was confidently expected that we would merely provide strong opposition, but Bill Fisher and his boys were equally confident of victory, and had formulated a plan to blunt the attacking power of the Leytonstone inside trio.

This was so successful that the opposition were compelled to test John Swannell with long range efforts.

Highlights of the game will live long in our memory. The goal by David Swain, who crashed a most awkward ball first time past the astonished Mackie. Goal number two by John Evans, two wonder saves by John Swannell, the dominance of Roy Sleap over free-scoring Peter Diwell, one of the most masterful centre-half displays ever seen on this ground, the curious handling of the game by the referee, the expression of incredibility on the faces of our back line boys when Roy Sleap's clearance cannoned off Ken Gray to give Leytonstone their goal, and the composure of our boys under pressure.
