Today’s look back at matches in the club’s history for our ‘On This Day’ feature sees a return to more normal workloads with 19 matches having taken place through the years.
The first came in 1921 with an Athenian League match against Chelmsford at The Avenue Ground in which a duo of strikes from Cecil Wise saw Hampstead Town to a 2-1 win over their Essex opponents. Four years later Wise was on target with another brace along with one each from Freddie Young, Vic Rowe and Stan Smith in a 5-2 win over Redhill, also at home.
In 1931 Bill Morton was the man to get a couple of goals along with one from makeshift centre-forward George Bucci in a 3-1 Athenian League win over Barking at Claremont Road and five years later a 1936 league match against Enfield ended in a 0-0 draw.
In 1942 on the day that British commando forces led a raid on the port of St Nazaire on the occupied French coast and the RAF launched a 200+ bomber raid on the city of Lubeck, Finchley launched a blitz of their own in the Herts & Middlesex County League as they hammered Golders Green 6-0. Eleven years later and club record appearance holder Bill Fisher grabbed a rare goal in a 1-1 Athenian League draw with Hayes at Claremont Road.
Half a dozen years on in 1959 a London Senior Cup semi-final at Wealdstone saw a Roy Thomas goal settle the issue against Wembley to secure a place in the final against Tooting & Mitcham United, not for the last time, and in 1964 in front of a crowd of 2,372 the Greens comfortably beat their title rivals Wimbledon 3-0 at Claremont Road. Jimmy Quail scored twice with Gerry O’Rourke also on target, this on the day that Radio Caroline began broadcasting from international waters.
A 1970 visit to Bromley saw goals from John Baker and Rod Haider secure a 2-1 win in the Isthmian League and two years later as Elvis Presley was recording his final top-10 hit, a cover of Burning Love, a rare strike from right-back Tony Jennings saw the Greens to a 1-0 win over Hayes at Claremont Road.
George Duck scored the Hendon goal in a 1985 visit to Bognor Regis Town in the Isthmian League, however the Greens went down 2-1 to the Rocks and a couple of years later in 1987 Iain Dowie was on target to secure the points in a league match against Kingstonian.
Another 2 years later a visit to Windsor & Eton ended in defeat in 1989 before a third clash with Hayes on this date, this one in 1992, ended in a first success for the Missioners as they eased their relegation worries with a comprehensive 3-0 win to ruin Gary Keen’s return to Church Road with the Greens just after he’d joined from Hayes.
1995 saw an extremely rare occurrence, quite possibly a unique one in the club's history as in the 3-3 draw with Grays Athletic at Claremont Road, goalkeeper Dave Hudson scored with an enormous kick from his own penalty box which deceived the visiting goalkeeper and went into the net. Uche Egbe and Phil Gallagher also scored in more orthodox manner.
In 1998 the duo of Paul Whitmarsh and Junior Lewis, who would share almost 70 goals between them the following season, warmed up in style with a goal each in the 2-0 win at Oxford City and then in 2005 an Easter Monday visit to the White Lion Ground to play Wealdstone saw the Greens triumph 3-2 in a thrilling local derby, John Frendo scored in the first half before second half strikes from Rene Street and Eugene Ofori saw Gary McCann’s side through and continue the climb away from danger.
In 2011 Canvey Island visited Vale Farm and returned back eastwards with a comprehensive 3-0 win before a 2016 derby with Wingate & Finchley at Summers Lane ended in a 1-1 draw with Dave Diedhiou grabbing the Hendon goal.
Of the 19 matches to have taken place to date on 28th March there have been ten wins, four draws and five defeats with 29 goals scored and 28 conceded.
