Today’s retrospective takes in a mammoth 24 matches that have occurred on 26th March, all but one of which has been a competitive fixture. We begin with a Middlesex League match with Wealdstone in 1914 which saw goals from Gordon Marchant and Eric Wright provide a 2-0 win for Hampstead Town.
Moving forward to 1921 and a friendly match against Northern Nomads ended in a 3-0 reverse before a 1927 Middlesex Senior Cup tie with Southall saw a return to competitive action and the West-Londoners return with a 1-0 win and progression to the final where they would beat Uxbridge 2-1.
In 1932, just 24-hours after losing 4-1 to the same opponents, Enfield were despatched 5-1 in the Athenian League with Wilf Minter leading the way with a hat-trick, Freddie Evans and W Bramley also on target. Seventeen years later in 1949 there was some degree of revenge on the part of the E’s as they knocked the Greens out of the Middlesex Charity Cup by the only goal of the game.
Just two years later in 1951 the club played two matches just 48-hours after their Amateur Cup semi-final replay loss to Pegasus. Whilst Hayes came to Claremont Road in the Athenian League and won 2-0, another XI went to Leyton and won 1-0 with a strike from Bob Avis doing the necessary.
Moving ahead to 1955 and a home game against Redhill ended with the Surrey side winning by the odd goal in five, Colin Edwards and Eric Parker grabbed the Hendon goals before a 1960 home match against Hornchurch & Upminster saw the East-Londoners win by the same scoreline, 3-2, this time Laurie Topp and Terry Howard were on target for the Greens.
As large-scale anti-Vietnam war protests broke out in the United States including in New York City, Washington DC and Chicago in 1966, Dave Swain helped himself to a hat-trick in an Isthmian League match against Maidstone United. Laurie Churchill grabbed the other goal in a 4-1 win. Two years later in 1968 Barking dished out a 4-0 hammering to the Greens on the road, also in the Isthmian League.
Roger Connell grabbed the goal that beat Ilford in a 1974 league match at Claremont Road, this on the day that Nicolae Ceausescu was named leader of the Romanian Communist party and in 1977 George Brooks was on target in a 1-0 win over Kingstonian, also at Claremont Road.
That run of single goal games continued in 1983 as Dermot Drummy netted the only goal against Bognor Regis Town, again at Claremont Road, before in 1988 a visit to Kingstonian ended 1-1, Iain Dowie on target for the Greens to ensure a share of the spoils.
Andy O’Brien and Laurence Holmes scored in a 2-1 win over Staines Town in 1991 at Wheatsheaf Lane before a 1994 goalless draw with Hitchin Town, both games in the Isthmian League. Then in 1996 Enfield came to Claremont Road and maintained their title challenge with a 1-0 win on the day that former Australian captain Allan Border concluded his first-class cricket career.
Half a dozen years later in 2002 Dave Anderson’s side followed up their half dozen goals against Heybridge Swifts with five more against Bedford Town. Eugene Ofori netted twice along with Martin Randall, whilst hapless Eagles defender Derek Brown endured a miserable evening grabbing a brace of own goals. Three years later in 2005 and Ofori was on target once again, this time with the only goal of the game as Harrow Borough were beaten 1-0 at Claremont Road to continue the climb away from the relegation zone under Gary McCann, this as Doctor Who returned to our screens after a 16-year absence.
In 2011 Belal Aite-ouakrim scored twice to secure the points from a visit to Folkestone Invicta, the game ending 2-1, and in 2013 the Greens’ improved form against Thurrock continued as Isaiah Rankin grabbed the only goal of the game at Vale Farm in a 1-0 win, this on the day that Ariana Grande released her first single.
Six-years ago today we hosted our first match at Silver Jubilee Park, a London Senior Cup quarter-final against Corinthian Casuals that saw Aaron Morgan (2), Leon Smith and Kezie Ibe on target in a 5-1 win. The scoring was completed by future Green Maz Bettache scoring at both ends of the pitch. This set-up an all Earlsmead semi-final against Harrow Borough. This on the day that Richard III’s remains were reburied at Leicester Cathedral.
Finally, just a year later in 2016 the Greens scrambled to a 1-1 draw against fellow strugglers Brentwood Town, Kezie Ibe grabbing the Hendon goal in a game that saw plenty of chances spurned to not only win the game but also ease their relegation fears.
Of the 23 competitive matches to have been played on 26th March to date, 13 have been won with three draws and seven defeats. 37 goals have been scored and 20 conceded.
