We move the ‘on this day’ section onto 25th March and following the glory of yesterday’s Isthmian League title win it’s a return to the relative mundanity of life in Non-League football.

Things began well enough in 1921 as Chelmsford were beaten 4-1 in an Athenian League tie, Cecil Burrage scored twice along with Cecil Wise and G Perry and then a year later in 1922 Summerstown won a local derby by the only goal of the game.

Freddie Evans was on target in 1932 against Enfield, however the E’s scored four times in a 4-1 defeat and a year later in the Amateur FA Senior Cup a semi-final against St Albans City at Leyton ended with the Saints winning by the only goal of the game.

Another semi-final ended rather more successfully in 1939 as Finchley were beaten 3-1 in the Middlesex Senior Cup with Billy Breagan, Jock Ellison and Bob Thomas grabbing the goals to set up a final against Wealdstone and a year later St Albans City once again triumphed in the Herts & Middlesex County League, this time 2-1.

In 1944, as the Germans executed 335 residents of Rome, a Herts & Middlesex League Cup tie against Wealdstone ended in a 6-2 defeat, Cyril Goodchild and F Barker on target for Golders Green. Moving ahead to 1950 and Bill Reay and Des Gittus grabbed the goals in a 2-1 Athenian League win over Enfield at Claremont Road.

Terry Howard netted the only Hendon goal in a 1961 Athenian League match with Hornchurch & Upminster, however the East Londoners ran out 3-1 winners as Sputnik 10 carried both a human mannequin and dog named Zvezdochka into orbit and half a dozen years later an Amateur Cup replay in Birmingham ended 2-2 against Skelmersdale United meaning the two sides would have to do it for a third time to try and find a winner. Jimmy Quail and Mickey Cooper were on target for the Greens.

In 1972 St Albans made it a trio of wins on the same date, not for the first time, with a comfortable 2-0 win over the Greens at Clarence Park and to continue the Midland Mainline theme, half a dozen years later a visit to Boreham Wood ended in a 1-0 success for the visitors.

Finchley were the opponents in a 1982 Middlesex Charity Cup semi-final which saw goals from Pat Brown and Kevin Folan grab a 2-1 win and a berth in the final against Uxbridge as Cagney & Lacey aired for the first time on CBS. Four years later in 1986 the Greens shared six goals equally with Wokingham Town with Colin Tate scoring twice and Tony Gibson grabbing the other goal to ensure a share of the spoils.

Carshalton Athletic grabbed the only goal of a 1989 Isthmian League match to take the points before goals from Barry Ferdinand and Phil Gallagher helped Mick Browne’s men to a crucial 2-1 win over Chesham United at Claremont Road to help ease their relegation fears in 1995 on the day that Mike Tyson was released from prison after serving a three year sentence.

Two years later and the points were shared in a goalless stalemate with Grays Athletic at the Recreation Ground and in 2000 a visit to Medway and the Kent riviera saw an early goal from Che Stadhart secure the points for Gravesend & Northfleet at Stonebridge Road, the Greens playing most of the game with 10-men following the dismissal of Gary Fitzgerald in the first half.

The second leg of the Isthmian League Cup semi-final in 2003 saw a 2-2 draw with Canvey Island, who went through 6-4 on aggregate, Ricci Crace and Martin Randall netted for Dave Anderson’s side and then in 2006 a crucial relegation 6-pointer at Claremont Road went the way of Windsor & Eton who won 2-1, Blaise O’Brien grabbed the Hendon goal from the penalty spot.

We end in 2017 and with yet another relegation 6-pointer at AFC Sudbury, traditionally not a happy hunting ground for the Greens. However, on this occasion there were no issues as Gary McCann’s men cruised to a vital 4-0 win. Kezie Ibe led the way with two goals that were added to by Keagan Cole and Matt Ball to give Hendon’s survival hopes a much-needed shot in the arm.

Of the 21 matches to have taken place on 25th March there have been six wins, four draws and 11 defeats. 30 goals have been scored and 36 conceded.
