Today we look at the 28th January and after a day of misery followed by a day of merriment, today’s lot over the past 112 years has been somewhat more balanced and measured.
A 1911 Finchley & District League Division 1 match against Campsbourne Institute ended 0-0 before in 1922 Sutton United were beaten 3-1 in the Athenian League. Reg Kirby scored twice and Stan Briscoe netted the other goal seal the two points.
1928 saw a Middlesex Senior Cup tie abandoned after 80 minutes due to heavy rain with Cheshunt 3-2 up, R Sear and D Levy had scored the Hampstead goals. Then in 1933 as the German government led by von Schleicher fell to usher in elections and the election of Adolf Hitler as Chancellor, Sutton gained revenge for their defeat 11-years previously with a 4-2 win in the Athenian League, Billy Breagan and Jimmy Spalton on target without reward.
1939 saw Jock Ellison grab the goal in a 1-1 draw with Bromley in the Athenian League at Claremont Road and in the post-war era, Finchley won a local Amateur Cup derby 1-0 in 1950.
In 1956 Wembley triumphed in a London Senior Cup tie at Claremont Road 3-1, Graeme Cunningham with Hendon’s consolation strike on the same day that Elvis Presley made his first televised appearance on the Dorsey Bros Stage Show and five-years later in 1961 as Rwanda proclaimed itself a republic (full independence wouldn’t arrive until the following year) Carshalton Athletic were beaten 2-1 in an Amateur Cup replay, Terry Howard and Graham Davies with the Hendon goals.
Another Amateur Cup tie in 1967 against Bristol St George ended goalless and 11-years later in 1978 Hampton were beaten 4-3 in a Middlesex Senior Cup thriller with Tony Field (2), George Brooks and Alan Campbell scoring.
It was in the Middlesex Senior Cup in 1982 that Staines Town were the opponents, the game ending 0-0 and a couple of years later Feltham were beaten 3-0 in the same competition with Richard Bradford, Steve Smith and Peter Stapleton netting the goals.
A 1989 Isthmian League match at Hayes saw the Missioners win 4-2, Martin Duffield and Phil Gridelet grabbed the Hendon goals and three years later Abingdon Town came to Claremont Road and triumphed 2-1 in the Full Members Cup, Mark Xavier scoring the Hendon goal.
Two goals from John Richardson and another from Mark Dawber were not enough to stop the pressure building on Neil Price in 1997 as Barking won 4-3 in a London Challenge Cup tie and in 2003 goals from Ricci Crace and Kieron Gallagher saw Dave Anderson’s side progress in an FA Trophy replay at Claremont Road against Heybridge Swifts.
In 2012 at Vale Farm, Michael Lewis and Elliott Charles scored in a 2-1 Ryman League win against Hastings United and then in 2017 a speculative effort from future Hendon man Tanasheh Abrahams from just inside the Hendon half deceived Berkley Laurencin and gave Wingate & Finchley the honours in a local derby with the only goal of the game.
Of 18 matches on 28th January a third have been won, four drawn, seven lost and one abandoned. 28 goals have been scored and 29 conceded to date.
