After the doom and gloom of yesterday’s look back in history, today’s provides us with rather more in the way of happy memories and a lot fewer miserable defeats to look back on.
In a rare occurrence in 1913, Hampstead Town played two matches on the same day in the Willesden & District League Premier Division. Kingsbury & Hyde were beaten 4-1 at The Avenue Ground with goals from Harry Hyde, Herbert Pike, Clive Bowden and Alfred Tomkins whilst at Kilburn another XI won 3-0 in the same competition with Jack Southwell netting twice.
In 1923 in a Middlesex Senior Cup tie Old Lyonians were beaten 5-1 at home, Freddie Young netting a hat-trick and Travers Day helping himself to a brace. 11-years later in 1934 a visit to Romford in the Athenian League ended in a resounding 4-0 defeat.
A 17-year wait then brought about an Amateur Cup trip to Suffolk to take on Bungay Town in 1951 where a couple of goals from Roy Stroud and one from John Westmore saw Hendon seal a comfortable 3-0 win and another Amateur Cup tie 11 years later in 1962 saw Pegasus crushed 6-1 at Claremont Road, David Bell and Miles Spector each grabbing a hat-trick to equally share the half dozen goals between them.
In 1968 Woking came to Claremont Road in the Isthmian League and returned to Surrey having been well beaten 4-0 in front of a season low crowd to date of 650. Debutant Graham Atkin set-up the first goal headed home by Don Whyte and that strike was added to by goals from Bobby Wilson, Tony Harding and an own goal.
Rod Haider, Keith Searle and Tony Bass scored the goals in 1973 to secure a London Senior Cup replay against Enfield following a 3-3 draw and in 1987 an Iain Dowie strike settled another London Senior Cup tie with the only goal of the game against Hanwell Town.
Three years later in 1990 a goalless draw at home to Marlow did little to set pulses racing but 8-years later there was rather more excitement as goals from Richard Nugent and Paul Whitmarsh, finally breaking a goal drought, secured a comfortable 2-0 win at Yeading in the Isthmian League.
Brian Haule netted twice in 2007 to beat East Thurrock United 2-1 at Rookery Hill, a crucial win that helped Gary McCann’s side recovery from a start of just 2 points from 11 league matches towards mid-table respectability and then just three years ago Casey Maclaren’s late equaliser secured an unlikely point against Folkestone Invicta. With 72 minutes of the game gone the Kentish side looked set fair for three points as they were 3-0 up. Joe White reduced the arrears before a wonderful virtuoso strike from Zak Joseph set up the grandstand finish and Maclaren’s equaliser.
In total 13 matches have been played on 27th January of which 9 have been won, four drawn and just the one lost. 36 goals have been scored and 13 conceded.
