2017 started for the first team just as 2016 ended, with a defeat, this time going down 2-1 at Dulwich Hamlet. However, the reaction to going behind was much improved on recent weeks, and whilst the home defence proved tough to break down, the effort of the squad couldn't be faulted as they searched for a way back into the game.
The opening period saw both sides have possession, but Dulwich always looked more likely to score, and they took the lead in the 25th minute when Ashley Carew netted from close range after a goalmouth scramble.
The home side doubled their lead in the 62nd minute. Whilst there is an argument that Kenny Beaney could have been closed down before he let rip with a fierce drive, it looked like Tom Lovelock had the ball covered until it took a wicked deflection off Casey Maclaren and flew into the top corner, giving the keeper absolutely no chance.
However, the Greens refused to let their heads drop, and pulled themselves back into the game ten minutes later when Reis Stanislaus crashed a shot home. As the Greens searched for an equaliser, Dulwich also probed forward, but found the Greens defence much more organised, and Lovelock in fine form, making two or three good saves. Keagan Cole was unlucky to see his shot hit Dave Diedhiou, whilst Mickey White came close to shutting down a clearance from the home keeper.
However, the end result was the same, another defeat, and the Greens now go into Saturday's game at home to Merstham knowing that a win is absolutely vital in the battle against relegation.
