Gary McCann was frustrated following the goalless draw at Canvey Island on Saturday afternoon.
"It was a day of frustration for us. We weren't at our best but we still did more than enough to win. Unfortunately we didn't take our chances.
"Their goalkeeper was the man of the match and he made six very good saves, but if our finishing had been as good as it can be, he wouldn't have had a chance to make most of those saves.
"Mentally, the defeat last Monday took a lot out of us and I could see at training on Thursday and in the dressing room before the game that it was still on their minds. I stressed to them that they should play without fear, and we did, but we were missing someone to take control when we were in good positions.
"The penalty miss was very disappointing. Since Jefferson Louis left, Anthony Thomas has been our designated penalty-taker, but when we have got them in recent matches, he wasn't on the pitch. Leon Smith took over the responsibility and did a good job.
"I would rather Leon had taken the kick, because he had scored with his last three attempts for us, but he let Anthony take the responsibility and I wasn't going to order which player was going to take the kick."
