Greens rue flat first half hour

A poor first thirty minutes, during which time Aveley scored twice, was the main contributing factor to the first team's latest defeat, with the Essex side winning 2-1.

The Greens performance for that first half hour is best described as very flat, and lacking urgency, and Aveley took advantage of an apparent slip by debutant keeper Nick Morgan in the 9th minute as Tony Russell bundled the ball home. Less than fifteen minutes later the lead was doubled as Danny Slatter found himself in masses of space, with no one closing him down, and he was able to fire of an excellent strike from 30 yards.

Hendon's goal came in the 33rd minute when a Scott Cousins corner was flicked home by the head of Brian Haule, and this seemed to spark the Greens into action.

The second half saw Hendon have the vast majority of possession, but the Aveley defence was in an unforgiving mood and chances were limited to a premium, the best chance falling to Jamie Busby, whose 82nd minute effort was nearly fumbled into the net by Dave McCartney.
