After last night and today's deluges, it is no surprise that today's game with Dagenham has again been postponed. Another attempt will be made on Wednesday.
Graham Etchell writing in Saturday's programme said about the pitch that it "is currently undergoing a three year restructuring programme and at the start of the plan in the summer the club and contractors were dlighted with the early improvemet, but we point out that any form of planning/design could not have envisaged the amount of rainfall. In year two and three this will now be take into serious consideration. The London clay below the surface is the main cause of the problem.
"The work carried out on the pitch in the summer is soaking up all that is being thrown at it, but the problem now is the clay. Nobody expected the volume of rain that has fallen here in such a short period and the water is now sitting on top of the clay and not reaching the drains efficiently. On the eve of the original date with Dagenham & Redbridge a machine was sent down from Staffordshire to try and break up the clay. However, the surface was so wet that the work had to be aborted as it was causing too much damage to the playing surface.
"During this period our supporters, despite their obvious frustrations, have remained very patient and we thank you for all that and promise you that everything that can be done is being done."
