Friday 23 April - Victory for Reserves

Golders Green Reserves were at home to Uxbridge Reserves at Claremont Road in the Athenian League, and proved altogether too strong for the opposition[, winning 5-0]. Golders Green's five goals were scored by W. Stovell (2), G. Marrable (2), and J. Chaventre, Uxbridge failing to respond. J. Jacobs, in goal for Golders Green, gave an outstanding performance, Marrable was efficient at inside-left, and a good display was given by H. Pearson (centre-half), a Yorkshire cricketerwho shows considerable promise on the football field. (Hendon Times, 23/04/1937, p.6)

Friday 09 April - Reserves beat Romford

Golders Green Reserves entertained the crowd with some good football at Claremont Road on Saturday in an Athenian League game against Romford Reserves, which they won by four goals to two. The match, which maintained a fairly good pace throughout, was made interesting by the closeness of the score for some time. The home side suffered a quick reverse and in the early stages the result was not at all certain. Romford looked very dangerous in the first half and even when Golders Green took the lead and drew steadily ahead they did not look a beaten team. They were fresh and pugnacious up to the final whistle and the result was always in the balance. The game opened with Romford attacking strongly and within the first few minutes they had scored through Metcalf. This early reverse did not daunt the Golders Green men, who retaliated a few minutes later by forcing a corner and then scoring through Marrable. Golders Green now did most of the pressing and they kept the ball consistently in Romford's half. The forwards were doing some good passing and keeping the Romford goalkeeper working hard. Romford occasionally broke away, but they did not look dangerous. Suddenly, however, the Golders Green defence found all the Romford forwards in their half. There was a brief struggle and Metcalf netted the ball to give Romford the lead again. Golders Green did not let them keep this lead for long, however. Bustard passed across to Marrable, who scored with an easy shot. Romford tried desperately to draw ahead again, but could do nothing before Golders Green scored again. A foul gave the home side a penalty kick and Bustard took the shot, beating the goalkeeper easily. Inspired by this lead the Golders Green forwards attacked vigorously and they played a good game. There was no more incident before half-time. The second half opened with Golders Green still pressing and they kept the Romford defence busy. The latter were making some excellent breakaways and looked quite dangerous. They got the ball in front of the home team's goal and almost scored before they could be dislodged. They had the best of the play and Golders Green were not showing up so well. Then they brightened up and attacked again. Bustard missed an easy goal, but a corner was forced, and when the ball came to midfield Ward took a long shot and found the net. The match never lost its pace and remained fast until the final whistle. The Golders Green side played a good game, although there was a little weakness in the defence, and some of the forwards, especially Bustard, were slow. Romford played well together, but their attack was rather ragged. Golders Green Reserves : W. Barnes; F. Alaway, T. Lewis; R. Ward, J. Pearson, J. Bloxham; J. Chaventre, F. Long, W. Stovell, G. Marrable, L. Bustard. Romford Reserves : J. Parrish; F. Gibson, J. Bishop; A.Clark, P. Nottage, S. Asater; J. Davey, P. Wren, W. Nidd, J. Lemerechal, G. Metcalf. (Hendon Times, 09/04/1937, p.6)

Friday 02 April - Two points dropped

Opening their game in very poor style on Easter Monday, Golders Green Reserves simply could not keep the Enfield team out of their half of the field for the first thirty minutes of their League match. Play was not exciting to watch, although Caswell, the left-back, was a clean quiet player who used his head well, not only for thinking, but for getting to the ball. Bustard, too, was a sound defender. Enfield Reserves were the first to score after a good move on the left wing, which brought Fairley clean past Ward. He then centred with a high kick and Hinsbey, the centre-forward, headed in. That was after a quarter-of-an-hour's play. Twelve minutes later the score was 2-0. This was the result of a central attack by Hinsbey and Walsh. Hinsbey found himself out of position and well-marked. He got rid of the ball to Walsh, who shot hard into the net. Then Golders Green seemed to get going and forced the pace. Marrable brought the play into the Enfield sector and soon Stovell had a chance to score. He took the ball nicely away from midfield and tricked Huntley and Graves. He had only Hughes, the 'keeper, to contend with, and easily beat him. Plenty of hard and high kicking characterised the game and resulted in a considerable amount of headwork. Within two or three minutes of half-time Golders Green succeeded in equalising. Woodbridge received a pass forward from Turner and shot. An appeal for offside came too late to be of any avail. Enfield led the scoring in the second half. Hinsbey brought the first goal from a corner kick. Play was much more open and even. Stovell certainly played a good game, but his standard was not up to that required of him the previous week for the first team. He was responsible for many good attacking moves. Golders Green again equalised, this time with a move from Chaventre on the left wing. He passed the ball right across the goalmouth and Marrable received it and put it in the net. This seemed to inspire the Golders Green attack and they kept the game down to the Enfield goal for a time. The visitors made several hard attacks, however, and one of these resulted in a free kick and Enfield's fourth goal. Barnes had picked up the ball to clear and was forced to run with it for a considerable distance. He went too far and carried it out of the penalty area. A free kick was awarded, taken by Hinsbey, and he made a lovely shot, beating the goalkeeper hands down. There was plenty of hard play after this, but no other incident of note marked the game. [Final score: Golders Green Reserves 3, Enfield Reserves 4.] Golders Green Reserves: Barnes; Bustard, Caswell; Ward, Turner, Whiting; Chaventre, Crowe, Woodbridge, Stovell, Marrable. Enfield Reserves : Hughes; Huntley, Graves; Littler, Bailey, Howell; Clamp, Walsh, Hinsbey, Rogers, Fairley. (Hendon Times, 02/04/1937, p.6)

Friday 02 April - Good Friday victory over Hayes

Golders Green Reserves met Hayes Reserves in the Athenian League at Claremont Road on Good Friday, and emerged winners by 2-1. Play opened scrappily with Golders Green promising rather better than the visitors, but Hayes rapidly improved and showed themselves the more stylish team, although weak shooting, plus the splendid display of Gibbs in the Golders Green goal, lost them the victory that they might have had. Golders Green scored in the first half, Stovell receiving from Long to net with a well-placed shot fairly high under the bar. Golders Green kept the visitors penned in their own territory during this half, but the high wind had as much to do with this as had the quality of the play. Much of the game was played in driving snow and sleet. After the change-over Hayes set a fast pace and weaknesses showed in the Golders Green team. Bustard, at outside-left, who had worked well in the opening stages, went off form, and there was too much fancy play in the centre, while it was a failure by the defence that let Willmott through to equalise for Hayes. Golders Green took the lead again through Stovell, but their goal was frequently in danger from then on. Ward, Long and Chaventre played a good game and the Golders Green goalkeeping was of a high standard. (Hendon Times, 02/04/1937, p.6)

Friday 12 March - Reserves get four against Sutton

Bustard, securing three successive goals, won the game for Golders Green Reserves at Claremont Road on Saturday, but the honours were shared by Jacobs, who gave a performance in goal which it would be difficult for any goalkeeper to beat. He saved countless shots under all sorts of conditions, from high leaps into the air to wild scrambles in the mud. Once he dropped the slippery ball, but rolled over to snatch it up again a fraction before it reached the fatal line. Another time he shot out of the goal to fall flat and smother the ball and the opposing centre-forward's boot when a goal seemed certain. He was the centre of attraction on Saturday and deserved the rounds of applause which came his way. The visitors were the first to attack and Thomas shot behind, Jacobs holding a long shot through from Saggers soon afterwards. Then Ward put the Golders Green forwards in motion and Chaventre cenred neatly for Marrable to shoot, but Williams cleared. Golders Green's opening score came from a penalty for hands, Bustard taking the kick. Bustard scored the second, the result of a free kick, and he added the third after half-time. Golders Green were working hard against a fast and tricky team, who would have had at least two goals but for the marvellous work of Jacobs. Ferraro brought off a striking solo effort to reduce the margin, but Stovell netted another for Golders Green. The game was full of thrills and the pace was such that both teams were visibly tiring before the end. Golders Green Reserves: J. Jacobs; W. Allaway; W. Berry; L.R. Ward, J. Pearson, H. Butt; J. Chaventre, F. Long, W. Stovell, G. Marrable, L. Bustard. Sutton United Reserves: Williams; Heasman, Helleher; Potter, Saggers, Cox; Thomas, Washford, Ferraro, Taylor, Logan.

Friday 05 March - High scoring Reserves beat Barking

Golders Green Reserves, playing with fine teamwork against a rather weak opposition, defeated Barking Reserves by 7-2 at Claremont Road on Saturday. The weakness of the visiting defence and the fact that Barking finished with ten men through injury, did not really detract from the honour of the home victory, for Golders Green fully deserved their goals. Almost from the kick-off Golders Green worked through in the centre and forced a couple of corners, and inside five minutes Marrable opened the score. Barking brought off several raids, but were not particularly dangerous, and were broken up by a steady, hard-kicking defence, while Jacobs dealt well with such shots as did reach him. Breagan netted Golders Green's second goal following clever work by the right wing, and one minute later Bustard converted a pass from Long. The fourth also came from Bustard, finishing off a solo run, and Breagan scored the fifth. Then came a more determined attack on the home goal, and after Jacobs had held two shots he was beaten by Harris (centre-forward). Barking promised better after the change of ends and the Golders Green backs and goalkeeper were given more work to do, but it was obvious that the visitors were outclassed, and it came as no surprise when Stovell put Golders Green further ahead. Harris gave Barking their second with a simple shot which would have given Jacobs no difficulty if he not been unsighted, and shortly before time Breagan scored Golders Green's seventh and last goal. The Golders Green halves played well and the forwards were a splendid line except when the centre-forward hung back occasionally. Golders Green: J. Jacobs; W. Allaway, W. Berry; Whiting, J. Pearson, H. Sharp; A.J. Breagan, F. Long, W. Stovell, G. Marrable, L. Bustard. (Hendon Times, 05/03/1937, p.6)

Friday 26 February - Points shared with Southall

Golders Green Reserves and Southall Reserves equalised with two goals each in an Athenian League game at Claremont Road on Saturday. The game was dull almost all the way through, because the pitch was in such a condition as to defeat any efforts at speed or any attempts to put through clever manoeuvres. The game opened with Southall pressing, but it was not long before Golders Green retaliated and carried the ball into their area for Crowe to score. Play then came back to midfield and was not over-exciting. Golders Green attacked again, but Ward missed an easy chance. Both teams were by this time labouring in the mud, but Southall were trying valiantly to score. They eventually overcame the home defence, and, after a run through on the left wing, Carter scored the equalising goal. With the score standing level, the second half promised to be more exciting, and it did become somewhat faster. Golders Green took the initiative and almost scored in the first few minutes. Southall retaliated and scored again through Eagles to take the lead. Golders Green now pressed hard and managed to get the ball back into midfield. Eventually a fine run through on the right wing gave Birkbeck an opportunity to net the ball. From now on the game was more or less exciting as both sides tried to draw ahead, but the game ended with the scores still standing level. (Hendon Times, 26/02/1937, p.6) Golders Green: R. Hill; T. Lewis, T. Caswell; L.R. Ward, B. Weaver, H. Sharp; A.J. Breagan, F. Long, J. Crowe, G. Marrable, L. Birkbeck. Southall: W. Hewlitt; A. Lovell, J. Wheatley; H. Marshall, A. Forsyth, J. D'Arcy; L. Codlin, A. Fennell, A.R. Eagles, G. Marchant, A. Carter.

Friday 19 February - Reserves share points

Golders Green Reserves journeyed to Barking Reserves in the Athenian League on Saturday. Straight from the start the Reserves went to the attack and were unfortunate not to be one up in the first five minutes when F. Long hit the upright with the Barking goalkeeper well beaten. The football displayed by Golders Green in the first half was far above Division II standard. Ten minutes from the interval came the Green's goal. From a defensive move the ball came from T. Lewis (a new lad and quite a promising back) to Ralph Ward, who hit it down the middle for Freear to steer the ball with his head well out of the reach of the Barking goalkeeper. Goilders Green kept the lead right up to 15 minutes before the close, when T. Lewis had the misfortune to handle the ball in the penalty area, from which Barking scored their goal. Where Golders Green played football, Barking resorted to hefty kicking and rushing. But time came with the score still one each. With the ball running a little more kindly Golders Green would have won quite comfortably. F. Long, from the Strollers XI, made his debut at inside-right, and passed out O.K. (Hendon Times, 19/02/1937, p.6)

Friday 12 February - Reserves' beaten by Avenue

Golders Green Reserves deserved a couple of goals in the first half, but failed to get them, and were defeated by Walthamstow Avenue Reserves by 4-1 in the Athenian League at Claremont Road on Saturday. So far as effort and determination went, Golders Green were the equal of their opponents. In point of fact, they kept Walthamstow in their own half for long stretches, but the visitors had the extra bit of skill that counted. Early in the game Golders Green had a narrow escape when Hill only partially cleared a shot from Webster. Another from Green passed a foot outside the posts. At the other end Bustard and Weaver promised well on several occasions and Breagan had hard luck in shooting just over the top. Sure passing by the Walthamstow forwards then gave the Golders Green defence an awkward five minutes and Hill only cleared one shot by falling on the ball and scrambling it away. After further attacks by Golders Green, Walthamstow opened the score, Webster heading in neatly from a centre by the outside-right. Golders Green fought hard for an equaliser, but Walthamstow went further ahead through Green close on half-time. On the run of play Golders Green were worth more than an empty score sheet, and in the second half they might at least have equalised had they swung the ball about more, but their only score came from Marrable after the Walthamstow goalkeeper had dealt with three shots in quick succession. They were all good tries, but luck was dead against Golders Green. Walthamstow's third goal was netted by Green, and Webster put in the fourth and last after the goalkeeper had fallen in saving a shot from the left wing. (Hendon Times, 12/02/1937, p.6)

Friday 29 January - Reserves beaten by Leyton and mud

Ploughing through the mire, wading through the water, Golders Green Reserves played Leyton Reserves in the Athenian League on Saturday, while seagulls whirled overhead under the impression that Claremont Road was the foreshore of Southend-on-Sea at low tide. The ground was in a shocking state and there was little opportunity for good play on either side, but Golders Green could have won the game if they had done more hard kicking and less pretty work in midfield. Leyton set the example, but Golders Green refused to be shown, and lost the points in consequence. There was one change in the home team, Berry taking the place of Ward at right-half. Leyton kicked off, but Golders Green were the first to attack and Bustard shot behind the goal. Chaventre and Morton promised well, but only gave Golders Green a fruitless corner, and from the clearance Holden sent Leyton away on the left. Warren, at outside-left, took the ball well up the field and centred for Carter to shoot. Shorland headed the ball away, but Bellinger recovered it and shot low down to give Leyton the first goal, seven minutes from the start. Cornford, in the Leyton goal, was called upon by Bustard and Chaventre, but it was Frear who equalised, following through when Cornford hesitated after starting out to intercept a pass from Morton. Pearce headed in off Warren to give Leyton the lead again, and the score remained 2-1 at half-time. Marrable nearly equalised after the change of ends, shooting close outside the Leyton goal, and at the other end Jacobs saved twice from Bellinger and once from Carter, the Leyton centre-forward. Both goals had narrow escapes, but there was little merit in defence or attack on such a surface. Players went down or stuck in the mud, passes were ruined by a ball as dead as a lump of lead, and either goalie was lucky to hold a good shot if a forward could get one in. The chance eventually came to White, who splashed his way in from the wing and beat Jacobs with a swift cross-shot, putting Leyton two ahead and, by now, in safe possession of the League points. Of the Golders Green team, Shorland was as good as any, seeming more at home in the sea of mud than any other man on the field. Golders Green Reserves: J. Jacobs; C. Smith, J. Shorland; Berry, J. Bloxham, H. Sharp; J. Chaventre, W. Morton, J. Frear, G. Marrable, L. Bustard. (Hendon Times, 29/01/1937, p. 17)

Friday 22 January - "A" team lose Reserve fixture

As the Reserves were engaged in the cup match, the Golders Green "A" travelled to Romford to fulfil their fixture, and they arfe to be congratulated on giving the Romford Reserves such a close game, the score being Golders Green 2, Romford 3. Had Golders Green taken their chances the result would have been quite different. They had five chances to score and only took two of them. The game started with a strong attack by Romford and by the end of the first half they had scored three. For Golders Green Allen and Hubbard scored following some clever play by Long at inside-right. Barnes in goal did very well after a shaky start. (Hendon Times, 22/01/1937, p.16)

Friday 01 January - Wealdstone complete Christmas double

On Boxing Day the two teams were in opposition once more at Lower Mead, Wealdstone, and again Wealdstone obtained the verdict by 3-2. The game was of a similar character to the one on Christmas Day, Wealdstone having bad luck in not registering more goals. The first came through a penalty, Skelton being brought down in the forbidden area, Mills being successful with the kick. Give-and-atake play followed for the remainder of this half. Peplar in the opening minutes of the second half put Wealdstone two up. Shortly afterwards penalty No. 2 occurred, Mills again proving his ability as a sure marksman. With this lead Wealdstone looked comfortable winners, but Golders Green thought otherwise and added two quick goals, which left the issue in a state of uncertainty, but with both teams showing the effects of the heavy going neither side looked like troubling the goalkeeper and all were grateful to hear the final whistle. (Hendon Times, 01/01/1937, p.15)

Friday 01 January - Christmas Day defeat by Wealdstone

On Christmas morning, at Claremont Road, Wealdstone proved victorious by 3-1. Playing [with] ten men for half-an-hour whilst Meikle was being sent over from Wealdstone, they had by far the better of the play, and after the Green's goal had had many narrow escapes Lloyd broke through and scored a fine goal. Continuing to have the better of the game, but experiencing wretched luck, Wealdstone had the mortification of seeing Golders Green equalise, the centre giving Jackson no chance whatever. Wealdstone were soon leading when Mills scored with a hard drive, having previously had a goal disallowed for offside. The interval arrived with Wealdstone leading 2-1. The second half saw Wealdstone again dominating the game, passing between the left wing being quite a feature, but in spite of all this good work goals would not come, and with Golders Green more dangerous through their wingers matters did not look too rosy until Mills scored his second goal. This point seemed to infuse new life into Wealdstone, who from then onwards were all out to maintain their advantage, which they successfully did. (Hendon Times, 01/01/1937, p.15)

Friday 18 December - Reserves good win at Sutton

At Sutton om Saturday, Golders Green led at half-time by one goal to nil, this being scored by G. Marrable from a pass by J. Chaventre. On resuming the Green's attack was full of fire and straightaway from the kick-off the ball was pushed through by R. Ward to J. Hill. He passed to Marrable, who immediately swung the ball across to Soden, who netted. Five minutes later Golders Green scored again through Crowe, a boy from the "A" team, who made a promising debut. Soden obtained their fourth goal, and after Sutton had scored from a breakaway, Marrable and Crowe brought the Golders Green total to six. The outstanding player on the Golders Green side was L. Birch, playing at right-back. (Hendon Times, 18/12/1936, p.16)

Friday 04 December - Reserves defeat Redhill

In an Athenian League match at Claremont Road on Saturday, Golders Green Reserves beat Redhill Reserves by four goals to two after an exciting match. Redhill certainly had the advantage in size. They towered above the Golders Green men and certainly looked most formidable. Almost from the kick-off, however, it was evident that they were not going to have things all their own way and never once did they shake the confidence of the home team. Soden repeated his performance of the previous week by scoring with a long shot in the first few minutes. This clever piece of work on his part so demoralised the other side that he had almost scored again within two minutes. The home team were now definitely on top of their opponents and with such an advantage early in the game things certainly looked black for Redhill. Their defence showed signs of weakness and they left their goal open to some vigorous attacks. Further, whenever the Redhill men got away they found themselves up against the almost impregnable defence of Birch and Cox, and could do nothing. There was some weakness in front of goal by Golders Green, but eventually Marrable scored. This second goal put Redhill on their mettle. The y made a determined effort and just before half-time they saw their opportunity. Bustard was injured and had to leave the field. With their side weakened the home side could not withstand the assault and Wasford scored for Redhill. The second half opened with an alteration in the Golders Green side. Bustard, still evidently troubled by the leg injury he had received in the first half, went to outside-left, and Marrable took over his position in the centre. Redhill opened with a vigorous attack, but they could gain no advantage before the Golders Green forwards broke away and Soden almost scored. The game was now fast and exciting, Redhill trying hard to draw level and Golders Green trying equally hard to maintain their lead. The home forwards were playing well together and putting through some nice solo movements at the same time. Their third goal came from a penalty kick taken by Bustard. Redhill followed this wth their second goal, also scored by Washford. Golders Green, however, increased their lead when Chaventre scored fom a good pass by Bustard. In spite of the failing light the game continued fast and exceiting right up to the final whistle. The whole Golders Green team played a good game: they combined well together and their passing was excellent. Redhill lacked fire and did not play quite such a good team game. Golders Green : R. Hill; L. Birch, E. Cox; H. Sharp, B. Weaver, J. Shorland; J. Chaventre, E.W. Soden, L. Bustard, J. Hill, G. Marrable. Redhill : Ewens; Wilkinson, Lockyear; Miller, Young, Parratt; McNarr, Baker, Washford, Collin, West. (Hendon Times, 04/12/1936, p.16)

Friday 27 November - Reserves' Middlesex Cup victory

That the score in the Middlesex Intermediate Cup replay between Golders Green Reserves and Uxbridge Reserves on Saturday was only 1-0 in the home team's favour, showed that the match was a close one. On the previous Saturday while playing extra time at Uxbridge, the match had to be abandoned owing to bad light. The score was then 3-2 in Golders Green's favour. Saturday's game was disappointing, because Golders Green showed every indication of being an overwhelming side. They advanced to the attack in fine style, but when it came to the vital moment the attack went to pieces. On the other hand, the defence was sound. A great deal of the work fell on Birch, but he was equal to it. The game opened with a strong attack by Golders Green, which culminated in a goal by Soden. The shock evidently brought the Uxbridge men to their senses and from the kick-off they retaliated and for some time they kept the ball in Golders Green's half. They could do nothing effective against Golders Green's strong defence, however, and they soon found themselves dislodged and racing after Soden and Chaventre. Soden manoeuvred cleverly and Chaventre sent in a fine pass, but the other forwards were not up and the chance was wasted. The home team forwards were playing a fairly sound game at this point, but they were a little too erratic to do anything decisive. Hill was working hard and making some good solo efforts, but the unerring judgment of the Uxbridge goalkeeper seemed to have a demoralising effect on the forwards. They gradually lost fire and the Uxbridge men broke away to carry the play once more into the home team's territory, but again they were helpless against a sound defence. Now came a nice piece of work by Marrable and Hill. They went through in style and a strong shot gave the visitors' goalkeeper another opportunity to make a spectacular save. The game now slowed down, the defenders of both sides took the opportunity to consolidate, and the forwards could do little against them. The home team attackers still managed to pepper the goal with passably good shots, but the Uxbridge defensive lines adopted crowding tactics against which they could do little. The play evened out considerably and the half closed without incident. Early in the second half Shorland met with an accident, but he was only out of the game for a few moments. The game in this half was very even and there was no scoring. Both sides missed good opportunities. The defence was the strongest part of Golders Green's team. Golders Green : J. Jacobs; L.C. Birch, E.F. Cox; H. Sharp, B. Weaver, J. Shorland; J. Chaventre, E.W. Soden, L. Bustard, J. Hill, G. Marrable. Uxbridge : Watson; Watts, Smith; Gunning, Briggs, Neville; O'Connors, Roberts, Giles, Seston, Underwood. (Hendon Times, 27/11/1936, p.16)

Friday 16 October - Sucess in London Intermediate Cup-tie

Golders Green Reserves pushed past Wimbledon into another round of the London Intermediate Cup on Saturday at Claremont Road with a 3-1 victory. It was a fast, clean game, holding plenty of interest, though the second half, which was goalless, tailed off somewhat. Thanks to the sound defence put up by Painter, Shorland, Weaver, and a new right-back, Berry, the at times rather lackadaisical play of the Golders Green halves and forwards did not yield to Wimbledon the goals it might have done. On the wings the home team was rather unfamiliar. Soden was playing on the left, and his left foot was not too sure. On the right was a nippy young newcomer, one Chaventre, who has been playing with the "A" team for the last two or three weeks. Golders Green were not prepared for what followed the kick-off. After about 90 seconds of mid-field football Nash suddenly went off down the right wing, and before Golders Green knew what had happened he centred, caught Painter awkwardly placed, and scored. Wimbledon rejoiced. But it rather put the Golders Green backs up and they began to hammer away at the Wimbledon goal in very determined fashion. For 15 minutes, however, their hammering had no effect. Then Bustard put in one of his special shots, and Golders Green were level at one all. Both sides were playing very good football, and the Golders Green forwards were at times quite impressive. Chaventre showed a nice turn of speed. When Wimbledon attacked down the right wing the centre was nearly headed in. With Painter on the ground out of goal, a second shot came from the left, and it was Shorland who saved the goal, clearing off the goal-line. The ball at once went back to the other end, and Bustard had a shot which was saved. After about 30 minutes Marrable put in a beautiful long shot which Vincent could not reach. So Golders Green were ahead. They continued to attack and after Chalk had shot right across the goalmouth for Wimbledon, Bustard put Soden on the move with a nice pass. The winger centred to Marrable, who took the chance and scored his second and Golders Green's third. In the five minutes of the first half that were left there was no further score, though both goals were attacked. There was no further score in the second half either. Despite the good football played by both teams, the 45 minutes seemed rather dull. Each goal had its narrow escapes. Twice long shots by the Wimbledon centre-forward hit the wrong side of the cross-bar and went out of goal instead of in. Bustard and Soden apperaed to slow down in this half. Outstanding in the Golders Green team were Marrable, Hill and Ward. Hill played brainily and with tenacity, while Marrable always looked as if he might score. Ward was always getting in the way of Wimbledon attacks. So was Shorland. Berry was not very impressive. When Wimbledon did attack they attacked hard and Golders Green had a stiff time keeping them out. Most of the Golders Green forwards had chances this half, but shot either wide or over the top. Two goals ahead, they probably felt in need of relaxation. Though the home team had most of the game, Wimbledon never gave up hope and were attacking when the final whistle went. Golders Green : F. Friday 09 October - Reserves lose at Leyton

Golders Green Reserves suffered their first defeat this season at Leyton on Saturday, but only by the odd goal in five. Golders Green scored first, Marrable netting after ten minutes, but Leyton drew level through Banning, the score at the interval being 1-1. Soon after the restart Leyton went ahead, Groves netting, but Bustard equalised, and the deciding goal came five minutes from the end through a breakaway, Banning being the successful marksman. It was an Athenian League game. (Hendon Times, 09/10/1936, p.16)

Friday 02 October - Reserves win at Bromley

Golders Green reserves beat Bromley Reserves at Bromley on Saturday by 2-0. It was a keen game, played at speed, with the visitors doing most of the attacking. But for the excellence of the Bromley defence, the Golders Green score would have been higher. Hill scored in the first half and Marrable in the second. (Hendon Times, 02/10/1936, p.16)

Friday 18 September - Reserves win at Southall

Golders Green Reserves were away to Southall Reserves in the Athenian League on Saturday. The match was fought in a very keen spirit and both sides were equally good. Southall scored in a breakaway five minutes before half-time. After the interval Golders Green dominated the play and penned Southall in their own half. After 10 minutes a goal by Soden, followed quickly by Bustard with another, absolutely demoralised Southall, who were putting the ball anywhere. Five minutes from time Soden again scored, making it three goals to one in the Green's favour, which score finally stood. Golders Green Reserves owe their success to good team spirit and team work. Each man pulled his weight and played well. (Hendon Times, 18/09/1936, p.14)

Friday 04 September - Bustard starts season with hat-trick

Golders Green Reserves followed the good example set by the first team and won their first match of the season, against Barnet Reserves, by 3-0 at Claremont Road on Saturday. Bustard scored all three goals. From the score it would seem as though it was an easy victory. Truth to tell, however, the home team were not impressive in attack, the forwards - with the exception of Soden - showing a tendency to stand still and watch whoever had the ball. However, the defence was sound, Shorland especially playing well. The ground surface looked excessively hard, and the heat was oppressive, with scarcely a breath of wind stirring. It seemed as though we were in for a spate of high kicking. We were. Unfortunately the kicks were mainly without direction. But the home team seemed to have the better part of the game, the Barnet players being effectively penned in their own section of the field, thanks to the Golders Green halves assisted by Hill. Hill played for most of the game with the half-back line, while Weaver went back and played as third back. This may have added to the defensive power of the team, but it was no help to the forwards, who seemed to miss the brainy work of Hill. They began to close the game up instead of spreading it out. Whenever Soden did get the ball he travelled. But he seemed to be the only forward with speed. Long revealed a tendency to hang on to the ball too much. The first shot at the Barnet goal did not come until near the end of the first half, and then it came from Shorland, who had moved up. A few minutes later Soden shot over the top. Whenever Barnet did get past the Golders Green backs, and for most of the time Morrison was effectively bottled up by Weaver, they found Painter more than capable of dealing with any shots they might put in. There was no score at half-time. There should have been. The second half opened in exciting manner. Soon after the whistle Bustard put in a high shot which Hawkins had to tip over the top. After four minutes the Golders Green forwards were back round the Barnet goal, and Bustard put in a low shot which hit the upright and bounced to the back of the net. Score one. Ninety seconds later Reay went up the left wing and centred to Long, who gave to Bustard, who shot without hesitation and scored again. He ran back looking as pleased as punch. It was unexpected. After this the play began to fall back into mediocrity again. Occasional flashes of fire came from the home forwards, but - quite understandably - it was too hot, even for fire. The third goal came after 20 minutes, when Soden was tripped inside the area. Bustard took the kick and made no mistake about it, crashing in a shot which Hawkins made a brave but futile attempt to save. Barnet found the pace too much for them, and their forwards seemed to relax. Golders Green were obviously on top, and the forwards have only themselves to blame that they did not score more often.
