Friday 05 April - Reserves beat Hendon Town

On Easter Monday Hampstead Reserves entertained Hendon Town and defeated them by two goals to one. Both sides were below strength and the game was spoilt by the high wind that was prevalent. Hendon played with the wind in the first half and the ball was mostly in the home team's half, but Hendon were very weak in front of goal, their shooting being most erratic. In the second half Hampstead had more of the play and Turner opened the score for them with a good shot from thirty yards out. Friday 05 April - Reserves win representative match

Hampstead Reserves entertained a representative side of the Hendon and District League on Friday, and defeated them by three goals to one. Wilson opened the score for Hampstead with a header from a free kick taken by Lee, and Shone added to the score from a pass by Graves. Edwards reduced the lead for the visitors with a good cross shot. In the second half Trevers, who was in good form for the home side, saved smartly from Austin and Jones. Friday 22 March - Heaviest defeat of the season

Hampstead Reserves, playing at Kingston on Saturday in the Athenian League, sustained their heaviest defeat of the season, seven goals being registered against them without response. The Kingston men were much quicker on the ball, and took all the chances that came their way. Hampstead fielded a stronger side than had been placed in the field for several weeks, but the only men who played up to their usual form were J. and G. Trevers, Cooper and Potter. Friday 15 March - Reserves drop points

Hampstead Reserves visited Barking on Saturday last and were defeated by four goals to one in a fast and exciting game. Barking, whose senior side were without a fixture, fielded several first team men in this game. Mason opened the score for Barking after Little had miskicked, the same player netting again shortly after. Hampstead attacked, but found the Barking goal-keeper in good form. Embleton got the third goal, and from a free kick taken by Crockford, Lumil headed in the fourth. Hampstead improved after the interval and Gregory did well to save from Fennell and Shone. Eventually the latter player scored with a good shot. Hampstead were awarded a penalty, but the Barking custodian saved well, and Cooper had hard luck in not scoring with a good shot that was just inches wide. Hampstead :- J. Trevers; A. Vincent, J. Friday 08 March - Reserve side beaten

Hampstead Reserves played Botwell Mission Reserves in a friendly and lost by four goals to two. Hampstead were without several of their regular players, including Trevers, the goal-keeper, who had to cry off at the last moment. Trials were given to newcomers, but none of them came up to expectations, and a poor game was the result. Ewers opened the score for Botwell and Shone equalised. The visitors took the lead again through Dychoff, and Shone, who was trying hard against his old club, again equalised. After change of ends Botwell added further goals by Dowse and Blanchard. Friday 01 March - Reserves drop points

Hampstead Reserves visited Cheshunt and were defeated by the odd goal of five. Shone opened the score for Hampstead with a fine cross-shot from a pass by Sear. Cheshunt equalised through Brockings. After change of ends Cheshunt were awarded a penalty for an infringement apparently only known to the referee. Bryant took the spot kick and scored. Hampstead pressed after this and Sear netted from a centre by Cooper after good work by Potter, who was playing in an unaccustomed position (left-half) but adapted himself quite well. Friday 22 February - Reserves get points

Hampstead Reserves entertained Leyton Reserves and defeated them by two goals to one, thanks largely to J. Trevers, who played a great game in goal for Hampstead. Leyton attacked from the kick-off and put in several good shots, but could not beat Trevers. Potter had hard luck the other end when he hit the upright with the goal-keeper well beaten. Jones scored for Leyton from a header; then Hampstead drew level. Fennell shot from thirty yards out, and Shone netted from the rebound. Hampstead took the lead through Fennell, who converted a centre from Shone. Hampstead did most of the pressing in the second half, but could not add to their score. For Hampstead, J. Friday 15 February - Reserves lose a friendly

Hampstead Reserves visited Leytonstone and played them in a friendly on Saturday last, but having had to field a weak side, the absentees including Parsons, Lee, Graves and Shone, they were defeated by five goals to two. Weller, late of Barking, opened the score for Leytonstone, and Bloxham, who got injured early in the game and went to outside-right, equalised with a header. Friday 08 February - Reserves lose at Sutton

Hampstead Reserves visited Sutton and were defeated by two goals to nil. Hampstead had enough of the play to have won comfortably, but could not beat the Sutton goal-keeper, who was in good form. Shone had hard luck when the upright was hit from a header. Sutton were awarded a free kick, the ball hitting the cross-bar, and Goossens scored from the rebound. Turner and Shone both put in several shots and Sear got right away, but could not put the ball into the net. In the second half Hampstead penned Sutton in their own half, but from a breakaway Ellis put Sutton further ahead. This is the first game this season in which the Reserves have failed to score. Friday 25 January - Reserves still winning

Hampstead Reserves gathered another two useful points on Saturday last, when they received Sutton Reserves and defeated them by three goals to one. Hampstead pressed from the start but it was not until the game was fifteen minutes old that Potter, who was playing in the unaccustomed position of centre-forward, opened the score with a good shot after beating two opponents. Prestwich put a neat pass through to Potter to score his second goal. Trevers was tested with a good shot from Ellis, but saved well. Potter had hard luck in not completing his hat trick, the Sutton goal-keeper stopping a shot rather luckily from close in. Miller should have added to the score, but shot feebly when well placed. After change of ends play was more even, Trevers saving well from A. Smith. After good work by Sear and Prestwich, Miller passed the ball across to Cooper, to get Hampstead's third goal, but unfortunately in doing so, Cooper got injured and took no further part in the game. Sutton were eventually rewarded a goal, scored by Jeffrey. Prestwich, a newcomer to the club from Thames F.C. and Leytonstone, showed very promising form, and should prove an acquisition to the club when he settles down with his new comrades. Hampstead :- J. Friday 18 January - Reserves as League leaders

Hampstead Reserves added another victory on Saturday last, when they visited Southall and defeated them by two goals to one, and in doing so go to the top of the Reserve Section of the Athenian League. Hampstead pressed from the start, and Shone was well placed with only the goal-keeper to beat, but put over the bar. Potter also just missed by inches after a good run through. Shone then opened the score for Hampstead with a goal shot from a centre by Sear. Southall drew level through Bridges from a pass by McKinley. After change of ends Hampstead pressed, but the Southall goal-keeper saved well on several occasions, and it was largely due to him that the score was kept down. Trevers, at the other end, had a comparatively easy afternoon. Potter gave Sear a chance to put a good centre over for Shone to tap into the net. Shone then again netted, but was ruled offside. Friday 11 January - Reserves draw at Bromley

Hampstead Reserves visited Bromley, and considering the last-minute changes in the team, put up a good performance in drawing with their much heavier opponents. The score was 1-1. Bromley, who were without their goal-keeper at the start, exerted considerable pressure, and were soon hovering around Martin, who was deputising for J. Trevers, and their outside-left, C. Seddon, was unlucky with a fine shot that just skimmed the bar. When Bromley's goal-keeper appeared Hampstead were seen to better advantage, but Wilson missed a glorious chance when well placed. Hampstead's right wing was playing very well and gave Bromley's defence a trying time, and finally Sear netted with a first-timer from a centre by Cooper. After change of ends Bromley pressed and were eventually rewarded with a goal, a header by Marshall from a free kick beating Martin. Stewart missed a glorious opportunity of giving Hampstead the lead after fine work by Potter, who tricked five men and then passed to Stewart, who had only the goal-keeper to beat. A ding-dong fight continued, but nothing further was added to the score, and a draw of one all was a fair reflex of the play. Friday 04 January - Win for the reserves

Hampstead Reserves received Enfield Reserves on Saturday and defeated them by four clear goals. Albert Parsons made a welcome re-appearance after being absent for over 12 months, and showed glimpses of his old form, and when fit will want a lot of keeping out of the first team. Bloxham took the centre-half position in place of Little, who was injured over the holiday games, and gave a fine display in an unaccustomed position, and was well supported by Turner and Lea. Graves was the outstanding player of the forward line. Stewart opened the score for Hampstead after a good run through. J. Trevers then saved well from Pinnuck. Sear got away on the right and put a perfect centre over for Graves to head into the net. G. Trevers, brother of the Hampstead goal-keeper, rounded Baker, the Enfield back, and got a good goal, and should have added to his score just after, but shot outside. After change of ends play was more even, both sides attacking in turn, Parsons heading out from the line once and Trevers saving smartly from Gyselman. Friday 21 December - Reserves' handsome victory

Hampstead Reserves received Windsor and Eton in the return match last Saturday, and easily defeated them by nine goals to two, six of them being credited to Haig, a new player from the Southampton district. Haig opened the score for Hampstead soon after the kick-off, and put on a further three goals. Graves then scored from a centre by Cooper, and Potter got the next with a good long shot. Windsor then attacked, but found Martin, who was deputising for Trevers, quite safe f or the home side. Haig obtained the next after a Windsor back had miskicked, and Graves got No. 8 from a pass by Potter. Hampstead crossed over with an eight clear goal lead, but Windsor played up pluckily and were rewarded with two goals, the scorers being Sibley and Weeks. Friday 14 December - Reserves win at Windsor

Hampstead Reserves visited Windsor on Saturday last, and defeated Windsor and Eton by six goals to two. A feature of the game was the triangular play of Thorlby, Potter and Sear, who caused the home defence a great deal of trouble. Graves opened the score for Hampstead with a header from a centre from Sear, and Potter got the second with a first-timer from Little after good work on the left wing. Windsor then attacked, but found Trevers in good form for Hampstead. Sear got away and Graves scored after the Windsor goal-keeper had only partially cleared from Potter. Turner then hit the upright, and thus Hampstead Reserves crossed over with a lead of three goals. After the change of ends play was more even, but it was left to Hampstead to score through Turner with a good shot from a pass by McKenzie. Windsor then attacked and scored through C. Roby, and following a second goal by Turner from a pass by Potter, Roby scored again for Windsor. Graves completed the scoring with a good drive from a centre by Cooper. Hampstead :- J. Trevers; J. Friday 07 December - Reserves beaten at Enfield

Hampstead Reserves visited Enfield and were unfortunate to be beaten by the odd goal of seven. Williams opened the score for Enfield after about fifteen minutes, and Miller equalised with a fine shot after Potter had hard luck in just heading over the bar. Sear got away on the right and centred for Cooper to pass to Haig, who tapped into the net. Enfield's second goal came from a free kick taken by Atterton just before half-time. After change of ends Miller hit the inside of the upright, but the ball rebounded into play, only to be put over the top. Enfield put on further goals by Williams and Purrett. Friday 30 November - Reserves defeat League leaders

Hampstead Reserves entertained the League leaders, Redhill, and defeated them by one goal to nil. By this win Hampstead are now placed one point behind Redhill. Chief credit must be given to Jimmy Trevers, who played a fine game in goal. Hampstead fielded the same eleven that was successful against Barking the previous week, with the exception of Turner coming in at centre-forward vice Neil, who was having a trial with St. Albans City. Redhill attacked strongly from the kick-off, but Trevers, in the Hampstead goal, was very safe, making several good saves. Turner had a good chance to put Hampstead ahead, but put just over the bar. Trevers roused the crowd with a fine save from Tucker, the old Summerstown player. Sear got away on the right, but was brought down unfairly, Thorlby taking the free kick for Miller to head into the corner of the net. Thus Hampstead crossed over with the lead. Both sides attacked in the second half, but both defences held out well, Trevers making two brilliant saves from Thompson, late centre-forward of Sutton United's first team. Hampstead :- J. Friday 23 November - Barking second team beaten

Hampstead Reserves entertained Barking [Town] Reserves and defeated them by five goals to two. A feature of the game was the work of the Hampstead right wing pair, Potter and Sear. Play was very even in the first half, both goal-keepers being called upon to save several shots. Hampstead took the lead through McCall, who managed to get the ball into the net following a free kick taken by Little. Neil and Miller both missed several opportunities of putting Hampstead further ahead. After the change of ends Cooper, who was having a trial for Hampstead, scored after good work by Miller. Sear got No. 3 with one of his special cross-shots from a pass by Potter, and then Neil scored from a neat pass by Potter. Attacking strongly, Barking got their first goal through Leach with a good shot, and after H. Miller had obtained Hampstead's fifth goal with a first-timer from a pass by Potter, Barking scored from a penalty for hands, taken by F. Miller, this being the last kick of the game. Hampstead :- J. Friday 16 November - A glut of goals

Hampstead Reserves, at Claremont-road on Saturday, returned to winning form in a high-scoring game, Cheshunt Reerves being defeated by seven goals to five. Smith opened the score for Cheshunt after two minutes' play. Potter replied for Hampstead witha good shot, and Neil got a second after good work by Potter. Cheshunt drew level through Smith, but Sear again gave Hampstead the lead from a pass by Little. Cheshunt drew level again through McKenzie, the ball hitting the post and rebounding into the net. In the second half Miller headed in from a pass by Potter, and after Cheshunt had once more drew level through Marchant, Shorland got the fifth for Hampstead from a penalty, and immediately afterwards Attwood replied for Cheshunt. Friday 09 November - Reserves again lose to Barnet

Hampstead Reserves visited Barnet aand were defeated by five goals to one. They had as much of the game as Barnet, but the finishing of the forwards was weak. Neil opened the score for Hampstead by a pass from Lea. Morris scored for Barnet from a centre by Deeks, and then put Barnet ahead with the best shot of the match. Hampstead crossed over one goal down. After the change of ends Hampstead played up well and should have gained the lead, but the inside forwards were very poor in front of goal. Friday 02 November - Reserves lose to Barnet

Hampstead Reserves were beaten at home for the first time this season on Saturday, Barnet winning an Athenian League game by four goals to two. Unfortunately W. Little, the skipper, had to cry off at the last minute owing to illness, which necessitated shuffling the team. Both sides were strongly represented and a good game followed, with Barnet just about deserving the points. Cousins, an old Hampstead player, performed the hat trick in the first half. Sear hit the cross-bar with a drop shot and Neil missed by inches, and Hampstead crossed over three goals down. In the second half, when Bloxham got more used to his unaccustomed position of centre-half, Hampstead put on two goals, Neil scoring with a good shot and Miller converting a centre by Sear. Friday 19 October - Reserves draw at Leyton

Hampstead Reserves visited Leyton and did very well to bring back a point. Shorland and Shearcroft reappeared, but Trevers was still an absentee. Martin, who again deputised, did very well between the sticks. Play was very even in the first half, but Leyton took the lead through Ball, who scored from a centre by Keenes. After change of ends Shearcroft scored from a pass by Potter, the same player giving Hampstead the lead from a centre by Fennell. Leyton drew level, through Ashton, about ten minutes from the end of the game, and Jones put the home side ahead after fine work by Keenes. Just before time Sear, who had hardly touched the ball in the second half, received a pass from Shearcroft, and put in a good centre for Shearcroft to complete his hat trick. Hampstead :- C. Friday 12 October - Reserves beaten at Redhill

Hampstead Reserves visited Redhill on Saturday and were defeated but not disgraced. They lacked the services of Trevers, Shorland and Shearcroft, but gave one of their best displays this season. Martin played well, but if the more experienced Trevers had been holding the fort a different tale would have been told. Payne played quite a useful game in place of Shorland, but Winterhalter was not a success at right-half. Fennell opened the score for Hampstead by a pass from Little, and Stewart missed a glorious opportunity of making it a two goal lead. Hudson equalised from a centre by Smith just before the interval and Tucker, the old Summerstown player, obtained the lead for Redhill. After the interval Hampstead drew level through Stewart, and Jones got the winning goal for Redhill five minutes from the end. Turner had hard luck not scoring for Hampstead, the ball being scrambled away, and Potter put in a good shot which the Redhill goalkeeper was lucky to stop. Hampstead team :- C. Martin; O. Payne, S. Friday 05 October - Reserves' first defeat

Hampstead Reserves met with their first defeat of the season when they visited Kingston on Saturday. They lost by the odd goal of five. Hampstead pressed from the start, Stewart, who was playing in place of Owens, shooting just outside. Shearcroft received a pass from Potter and was well placed, but was fouled just outside the penalty area, and from the free kick Little scored with a good shot. Kingston drew level through Wilson, who scored from a centre by Casey. Soon afterwards they took the lead through Casey. Hampstead's second goal was similar to the first, Shearcroft being fouled and Little scoring with a well placed shot. The teams changed over on level terms. After about thirty-five minutes' play in the second half Casey scored with a good shot. Shearcroft got the ball into the net, but was ruled offside, and Potter, just before time, put in a fine cross shot, the Kingston goalkeeper just managing to deflect. Hampstead :- J. Trevers; J. Friday 28 September - Another fine win

Having won their first three League games, Hampstead Reserves were hot favourites for their return game with Uxbridge Reserves, having beaten the "U's" a fortnight previously by three goals to two at Uxbridge. Winning the toss, Uxbridge decided to play against the wind, and were soon making for the Hampstead goal, Bloxham giving a corner to save a nasty situation. The kick was cleared well up the field to McCall, who, passing to Fennell, allowed him to put in a fine drive to put Hampstead one up after about fifteen minutes' play. Immediately after this, from a breakaway, Owens had a chance to score a second goal, but the Uxbridge goalkeeper saved smartly. Play ran fairly even for some time until Fennell, with a fine drive, had hard luck, the ball just hitting the top of the crossbar. Hampstead now made numerous attacks on the Uxbridge goal, but shots ranged each side of the goal but not in the net, all the forwards in turn trying to score. From a breakway by Uxbridge, and a miskick by Bloxham, Uxbridge equalised through Lloyd, a weak shot going in off the upright. From the kick-off Hampstead went straight up the field and a fine drop shot by Lea saw Hampstead regain the lead. Numerous attacks were now made by Hampstead, but all were of no avail, half-time arriving with Hampstead leading 2-1. With the wind against them it could be seen Hampstead were going to play better than in the first half, and in a few minutes Sear centred and McCall shot, the ball just going over the crossbar. Then Uxbridge got away and from a pass by Thomas, Goodman had hard luck, the ball just going outside after a very fine shot. A pass down the left wing from McCall to Fennell enabled the latter to send in a fine centre which Potter converted to make Hampstead three goals up. Keeping the ball in Uxbridge's half of the field, Hampstead made several more raids, and from another fine centre by Fennell, Shearcroft scored Hampstead's fourth goal. This rather upset some of the Uxbridge players and one or two free kicks for foul play were given against them. One, against Sear just as he was going to centre, brought Hampstead a penalty, Shorland scoring. Hampstead tried for further goals, but were met by a stout defender in the Uxbridge goalkeeper, and they eventually ran out winners with the score of 5-1. Friday 21 September - Fine win for Reserves

Hampstead Reserves kept up their winning form when they entertained Southall Reserves [in the Athenian League Reserve Section] and defeated them by five clear goals. Stewart opened the score for Hampstead following good work by Owens, and Potter scored the second goal from a pass by Sear. Owens was very thrustful in the centre and put in several good shots, but Hampstead had to be content at crossing over with a two-goal lead. Southall played up well after the interval, but could not score owing to Hampstead's defence holding out well. Eventually Potter put Sear away with a neat pass for him to put over to Owens to score the third goal. Soon afterwards Owens collided with the visiting goalkeeper and took no further part in the game. Fennell got the fourth goal with a fine low shot from about 30 yards range and Little completed the score with a good drop shot which thoroughly deceived the goal-keeper. Friday 14 September - Reserves win again

Hampstead Reserves visited Uxbridge on Saturday and defeated Uxbridge Town [Reserves] by three goals to two. Cashmore opened the score for Hampstead after good work by Sear on the right wing, but Uxbridge put on two goals through Goodman before the interval. A penalty was awarded Hampstead through an Uxbridge defender handling, and Shorland made no mistake with the spot kick. Hampstead again took the lead through Shearcroft, who met the ball from a goal kick and placed it well out of the reach of the goal-keeper. (Hendon & Finchley Times, 14/09/1928, p.11)

Friday 07 September - Reserves off to winning start

Hampstead Reserves opened their programme at Claremont-road with a win, Bromley being defeated by three goals to one. The result was very satisfactory to Hampstead, who were a man short for half the game owing to the non-appearance of Reggie Sear. Hampstead fielded several new men, among whom were R. Owens, brother of Albert Owens, W.G. Lea from Weymouth, and D. Cashmore, from Watford St. Mary's. Cashmore opened the score with a first-timer from Owens after good work on the left wing. Bromley drew level through Keen after some very fine saves by Trevers. Hampstead took the lead through a penalty taken by Shorland, Potter having been brought down unfairly. The home teams's third goal was the best of the match, Owens , receiving a pass by Little, scoring with a fine cross shot. (Hendon & Finchley Times, 07/09/1928, p.11)
