Born Alfred James Breagan, but always known as "Billy", he signed for Hampstead in the summer of 1932 from Southall. Nominally an outside-right on joining the club, he occasionally filled other positions in the forward line, and the later years of his time at the club would see him playing occasionally at right-half.
